At first I was triggered by this list but then I felt nothing but pity.

Anyone who excludes Pink Floyd, Genesis, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Iron Maiden but includes Oasis, Stone Roses, the Jam and the Smiths clearly got dropped on their head as a baby.

Put it this way. The article has picture of Queen with it. But not with Freddie Mercury singing.

I am loathe to criticise others top-10 lists, but when you start with that, it's clear you have no freaking idea what you are talking about.

@mn5 Music's subjective. I wouldn't have Genesis, Sabbath DP or Iron Maiden but I wouldn't have Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Stone Roses, Smiths, Jam or Oasis either.

Trying to pick only 10 British bands is ridiculous. Like trying to pick the top 10 AB try's of all time. There might be a couple everyone agrees on but after that it becomes personal preference and also generational. I mention Kirkpatrick against the Lions - your eyes glaze over etc

Yeah, gets way to much into personal taste and perspective for a good portion of a list.
I would say that there are probably 5 undeniables In Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zep and Queen.
Clash, Pink Floyd, Kinks all with very strong claims.
Then any number to argue over.
Simply from sheer numbers and how well known their songs are known I can’t see why Oasis shouldn’t be somewhere on a list. If they were to announce a reunion gig tomorrow it would have enormous demand.

Yeah of course it is and whilst I’d never listen to the Beatles, Stones or Queen by choice I do realise they belong there. Others don’t though.

@crucial I'm glad you mentioned The Kinks. They were a very influential band and so many of their songs have been covered by other artists.

I’d add Pink Floyd to the undeniables. Dark side of the Moon was on the charts for about 15 years !!!

Personally I would have the Who and Queen on the next tier as I've never really been into bombast rock but their sales and popularity are undeniable. But then Coldplay have sold gazillions and ....

As soon as I saw @MN5 original post I thought Clash piss all over Jam and Kinks have to be there or thereabouts but agree after the first 3 or 4 it becomes very disputative. I don't think you could get people to agree on even a Top 50.

I doubt we'd get consensus on a Top 10 Kiwi bands. I reckon age has a lot to do with it. You always retain a soft spot for the bands you loved in your adolescence. You can see that from what is popular here on the Fern.

Awesome effort but I’m not sure how accurate album sales are to be honest. You can google any artist and get a number but take it with a grain of salt.

I personally find it baffling that people love the Beatles and the Stones like they do but I’m sure I’ve ranted on here enough about that.

In terms of kiwi bands perhaps ( in my opinion and in no particular order ) The Dudes, Shihad, Dragon, Hello Sailor, Split Enz, Kora, Salmonella Dub, The Datsuns, Crowded House and Supergroove would be my top ten.

Can’t stand the Exponents, Six60, Herbs or any band that Dave Dobbyn sings too much in ( he makes the list as a member of the Dudes though )

I didn’t take the premise as being “my favourite” or even really on sales. My guess was an unscientific guess on who would draw a crowd, how big the demand for tickets would be IF the band had a magic potion that would bring members back to life and have them playing at their prime. Then factor in quantity of work and longevity. How many songs have moved through generations etc?

Probably the close we've ever come to agreeing on a music thread. I would swap Pink Floyd and The Who on the undeniable. I do really enjoy The Who, but I'm not sure they are quite at the top level like the others.

Clash, Pink Floyd, Kinks all with very strong claims.

I do sometimes wonder if the next generation will look back at Oasis, Coldplay & then on the next level perhaps Radiohead / Blur as game changes in the way the others were. I highly doubt it.

Yeah I struggle with where to rate the Who…..they had what many consider the best rhythm section in history, Townsend was a great writer…..but Roger Daltry as good as he was just wasn’t up there with the very best Rock singers….

They have done some undeniable bangers though and were part of a period in time where British rock bands shat all over their American counterparts overall

I think this is a bit of a myth. Sure there was a British invasion but that was as a result of every record company trying to find the next Beatles. For every Stones, Who or Kinks there was a Hermans Hermits, Tremeloes or Dave Clark 5

US bands of the 60's off the top of my head that were innovative and popular - Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Doors, CCR, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, Grateful Dead, Zappa, Beach Boys - plus the Motown discography. Not all of those are my thing but there's enough to negate any notion of British superiority.

I don't include Hendrix as he was really a British act who just happened to be a Yank.

@antipodean Given the number of different formats I’ve bought over the years, I reckon I’m responsible for about half those sales.

I'd suggest having two albums on the charts resulting in universal agreement as amongst the biggest selling albums of all time is incontrovertible. It's not like pre-sales were a big thing when they were released.

If Floyd could reunite they'd sell out any and every arena. As would the Beatles and to a lesser extent Queen IMO. There are bands who come to define eras and those who have a massive influence on musicians/ genres after them, such as the Clash and Kinks.

It could be just my bias, but I doubt Oasis would manage the same.
