Easily my favourite team to tour as their fans are fantastic and create the best atmospheres.

I will be gutted if they play a test at Eden park. Probably the worst test cricket venue in NZ.

if they get a day/night test at eden park, and we get 20k/day there, it's a win. I think this would be a seriously viable proposal.

If it is a day test with 10k in the ground it's still a bit quiet.

As a test venue, the pitch and playing area is fine, it's the empty stands that are the problem. Watching is great, especially from teh upper south stand right behind the bowlers arm. Elevation makes cricket better.

I completely disagree. THe playing area/shape is awful for test cricket. Even as a sell out, it isn't test quality venue.

Oh and this isn't a "Auckland" thing. I wish Auckland had a fantastic test arena for test cricket (Like Hagley but bigger) I think we would see some great crowds

I used to think that, but was convinced by a mate that size is far less of an issue in test matches than ODI and T20.

The new shape is regular, with full side boundaries and short long boundaries. It's actually pretty cool sitting in the stands - you can hear the slips talking to each other.

What do you think means it is awful for test cricket? Short straight boundaries? The old configuration was arguably worse - had some short and some long boundaries in weird places.

OK, I went and measured it. Google Maps shows Eden Park at 130-135m boundaries, and Seddon Park at 125 m boundaries. They don't look massively different - even if Eden Park is estimated as it is partially covered by stand roofs.

Anyone have access to ground dimensions?

Yeah Eden Park is not a cricket ground. I heard talk of building an international standard cricket ground at Western Springs a while back, no idea if that will be progressed though. The sporting venue's in Auckland are a joke compared to other parts of the country.

Awful in my opinion I mean, rather than actually being detrimental to test cricket.

I like that test cricket is a bit more traditional and should be played on more of an Oval, like the Basin and Hagley and Seddon.

One thing I do agree on is that with the English touring there could be good crowds at Eden park as the smaller grounds sell out.

You make a good case for Eden Park 🙂 I went there for a couple of T20s last summer - first time I'd been there - and I admit it was very good viewing. You can be elevated high behind the bowlers arm with a fantastic view but still feel very close to the action.

Tests have always been quality at Eden Park, even with the wonky boundaries.

Always enjoy this series - incredibly tight games that regularly go day 4 and beyond.

Dodgy facilities and also Sewerage problems. Farily untidy by the sounds and NZC has had enough going by the article.

Likely to be at Eden Park and Hagley

I hope Hagley is first as TV will show a full house and talk about being sold out. Folks around Auckkland and Waikato will hopefully see this atmossphere and want to recreate it at Eden Park. If not, it will look dire on the box

NZ cricket needs to invest quicksmart to sort it out then. The Basin is far too good a ground to risk losing.

I'm assuming the university oval isn't an option cos it is too small ? shame, really nice looking wee ground but I suppose Windies and the other two teams I mentioned are about their limit.....

I don't want NZC wasting money on the Basin if the management of the Basin can't look after it.

Then they obviously need to change too. The Basin is a bigger part of our cricketing heritage than anywhere in the country ( that's not Wellington bias talking either )

I agree but NZC needs to see change before offering any help, not the other way round

Last time NZC played at Eden Park for a test they made heaps of coin. We have some good test venues but most of them are pretty small. We really need a 20,000 seat dedicated cricket venue in Auckland.

NZC won't be putting anything into the Basin Reserve.

Western Springs is I think a dead duck after Akl crickey said they would continue to play domestic cricket on EP#2. So really wanton Akl Council to develop it solely for tests.

EP is much better now than in the past. Great viewing but even with 20k in it looks and sounds pretty empty.

It was fucking awesome for CWC against Oz and SA tho.

I wud happily get my jabs and drive down to Seddon park. Or even better catch a train. But I reckon money will talk which from NZCsperspective is fair enough

That's a good point regarding the train as it parks near Seddon Park.

Expensive and slow - we looked at it for the RWC2011, but return cost was around $150 per person.

That buys a lot of sober drivers
