That is not a deliberate knock on

Not by the definition in the English language,
But yes, by the definition/interpretation of World Rugby.
Amazed, but happy, that wasn't a Penalty Try.

They need a red card to spark them up.

Going for an intercept by throwing one arm in the air whilst jumping, yeah nah. Easy YC when the attacking team are in the red zone.

So any failed interception is a deliberate knock on...
I thought the rule was not slapping the ball in a downward motion

@nzzp it’s not because he’s clearly going for the intercept.

    yep. But

World Rugby Passport - Laws by number

It is not an intentional knock-on if, in the act of trying to catch the ball, the player knocks on provided that there was a reasonable expectation that the player could gain possession.

Jumping one hander = not a reasonable expectation.

Whatever your opinion, the way the game is reffed these days it's a YC if there is an overlap

No, you saw one from England in this very game.

He’s going for the intercept ffs.

    And failed

    High reward, high risk

    Exactly this.

If you said it's not a deliberate knock-on unless the player was actually trying to smack it without catching it then the offence wouldn't exist.

I don’t think so. He’s going for the intercept.

Since when has it been ruled like that? 2012? That is a clear YC under these interpretations. Whether it should be or not is another question. If that wasn't a YC, then it would be hard for any deliberate knock to be a YC,

I think that was a furphy invented by Aussie commentators / coaches/ fans a couple of years back to justify their rage at not being given a knock-on when Nick Tompkins
    knocked it down (and backwards)

England's kicking much better than ours. Kicks into space and keeping Australia deep in their own half.

Excellent tactics by England. Getting in behind the Oz defensive line with their ball carries and short kicking game.
