Sam Cane could be dropped as All Blacks captain - report

There is speculation NZ Rugby no longer believe he is the right man for the job.

A source has told the Otago Daily Times that Cane could tomorrow be replaced as captain by veteran lock Sam Whitelock for the two-test series in South Africa.

It follows the All Blacks' dismal run of recent form that culminated in the home series loss to Ireland.

Cane, who has played 80 tests and been captain in 13 of them, will presumably keep his place in the squad as a loose forward, though he may lose his starting jersey.

But there is speculation New Zealand Rugby, acknowledging something has to be done to shake up a misfiring team, possibly no longer believes he is the right choice as captain.

Whitelock, a guaranteed starter when fit, would have the experience and mana needed for the role if Cane loses the captaincy.

In further playing changes, it is tipped Crusaders No 8 Cullen Grace and Highlanders prop Ethan de Groot will be added to the squad for the South African trip.

New Zealand Rugby was expected to announce a Rugby Championship squad yesterday, but that was delayed as the urgent review into the team's recent failings took priority.

It is now believed the squad will be named tomorrow.

There have been widespread calls for a shake-up of the coaching team but it appears Ian Foster will stay as head coach.

He will have Joe Schmidt alongside him in an elevated role.

It is understood that will involve Foster retaining the top job but Schmidt being promoted into a director of rugby-type role to address the All Blacks' malaise.

Wow, those fluffybunnies must really have drunk the cool aid if they are prepared to keep on Fozzie and hang Cane out to dry.

Yeah it seems a bit crap to be honest.I don't think Cane is in the best XV but if he is the poor bastard getting the main blame that is shit work.

If it is because of the loose forwards mix and wanting to keep Ardie on but add some grunt into 8 then it should be addressed that way.
“We want a captain that can remain on for 80 and need to explore the loose forward options. “
What annoys me more is if this is a leak and Cane doesn’t get the chance to go as a team man. No matter what he says people will think it is PR.

Holy shit! Sam Cane must have been in charge of selections, game plans, defense, and attack. I had no idea! Well, in that case, good riddance Mr. Cane.

Fuck I'll join you. Cane is not the problem and still has plenty to offer at test level. We need MORE players that tackle hard, not less!

Yeah, it'll be funny if we end up with a ruck watcher at 7. I'm trying to remember the last time we tried that? Some game with assholes in white shirts on the other team.

    @gt12 I'm confused. Who's the ruck watcher?

All I can think of when they say Cane losing the captaincy is that it is because they don't want him to be an automatic starter. I assume that's because they want to start Papali'i. Are you calling him a ruck watcher?

No. He's the next Sam Cane. Would be a good choice.

Cane needs to lose captaincy, therefore at the very least doesn’t start. Simple!

The squad assembles in Wellington on Monday so I am sure that the players know who is going to SA, or not.

With this management lot probably they don't know.
A few txts on Monday morning where are you the plane is leaving in 5 min.

I dunno once you're in Foster's squad it's hard to get kicked out. So it'll be the same 34/36 placyers with replacements for Brodie and Karl.

Probs Gus (misses first test doesn't he? And probably still concussed)
    And how is Ofa's noggin?

I think you have it arse about face. I have no issue with his captaincy or mana in the team. My questions are simply whether he’s our best option in the 7 jersey.
That’s either because they think Ardie can move back to openside (which I’m not convinced on. He has to be there but is neither a 7 or 8 in the traditional setups) or Ardie stays 8 and DP gets more time.
I agree that if DP is going to take over openside then he needs to get up to speed before the RWC but that solves nothing in regards to the balance of the looses.

I do. I'm a huge Sam Cane fan as a player.

He hasn't displayed the qualities to be a good captain.

He was captain when Chiefs went winless in Super Rugby Aotearoa a couple of years ago.

That said - whilst I don't rate him as a captain - I don't think it would be nearly as much of an issue if he was still peak Sam Cane. He's clearly not the player he used to be and can't demand a starting spot.

    @KiwiMurph “qualities”?
Not being overly effective is a bit different to qualities in my lingo. Maybe dictionary boy will sort it out 😉

There's more to being a leader than being a good or effective player.

Keven Mealamu was a wonderful player. He was not a wonderful Blues captain.

BTW if my sauce is correct the reason for delaying the announcement of the team has no conspiracy attached. It is for far more normal and “human” reasons.
    It may become evident soon.

Agree. That’s not what I was getting at. Cane has leadership qualities in my view and going by the respect his players have for him. I just find him not very effective in on field management of the game or ref “playing”
I still think he’s an effective player. The last game looked like he was carrying a heavy burden and that’s a sad way to end. Hopefully he can do a Ross Taylor.
