Just watched the highlights of the men's road race, brilliant ride by Aaron Gate. The field opened up in the final sprint and Gate just powered down the middle for the win

Gate’s sprinting superiority won him that race. Brilliant finish and he looked almost stunned that it opened up for him in that final sprint. Some interesting tactics by a couple of the riders including the Welsh and Aussie ones at the front.

@Bovidae that netball bronze match was our best match of the games. Our defensive pressure was very good. Lots of deflections and tough covers

It didn't even look like a sprint in the normal sense. He just had the power to ride a bigger gear at a higher cadence is what it looked like. Just cruised past.

Pleasantly surprised to hear that NZ won the bronze medal games over England in the cricket and netball after losing their earlier clashes.

And Aaron Gate with a 4th gold medal. He was only meant to be a support rider in the road race. 🙂

Ed Hillary would be most proud 👏

Guy was obviously on a peak and took advantage of it. I haven't watched yet but I did watch the women's race. What a shit sub standard course for a road race. May as well have gone around the track a few hundred times.
In the women's race despite some massive efforts fro England, NZ and a few others, no one could make a break as Oz had a 6 strong team that rode like team pursuit the whole way and just kept shutting things down. There was nowhere in the course for different abilities to have their moment and shake things up. No uphills, no downhills, no tight corners.
I think Gaze had a course that suited him and an advantage of seeing what happened in the women's race. The others didn't think he was going to still have legs at the end or be a sprint threat so gave him too much leeway. Suckers.

I watched the women's race and immediately put a hundred bucks on Cav to win cause it was the most featureless race circuit I've ever seen.. but thanks to red wine I forgot Cav rides for isle of man so every other person in that race was out to stick it to him and with no Ewan no other teams interested in a sprint finish!
Anyway make sure you watch the last 60 km - most dominant performance you'll ever see from a kiwi cyclist. Was kinda luck of the draw he ended up in the break that stuck after all the early attacks - but once there he was the dominant rider who did a shedload of the work, chased and drove any other breaks nearly getting away with a smaller group a few times, and still had enough to stay there at the end when serious world tour riders were getting dropped.
Benefited from some South african teamwork late then got a dream tow to the line before absolutely smoking them in the finish. Gatey is the calmest guy under pressure showed incrediable patience in the end, but have no doubt if he needed to go solo to win he was strong enough to do that too.
Shame age isn't really on his side - deserves to be a world tour rider - just one of those guys that it's never quite worked out for him..

I think he can thank Thomas for dragging back most of the attacks (England had 3 guys taking turns attacking) and then the other Sth African rider bringing the final big attack back. And of course, the Aussie Plapp for leading him out. England failed to get on the podium with 3 guys. That is shocking.

    Yeah, dark days.

In the days of only 3 channels. Even someone who becomes famous in an 'ironic' way can still have it taken too far for 'the public good'.

The key thing they don't explain well is our athlete quota for athletics. That seems to be the root cause of unrealistic targets. Trying tofind ways to work out who gets the golden ticket.
It just always seems weird when other countries send 'participation' athletes to events where we don't send competitive ones.
What s the quota based on? It must have a basis and it doesn't look like population.

Edit: did some googling (and the so-called journalist's job)

It goes like this . CG Birmingham gives quotas to participating countries (not sure of the basis). NZOC takes that quota and allocates spots to various sports. Athletics NZ then has to manage a selection policy that they have agreed with NZOC will meet their performance requirements. Obviously if the number of athletes wanting to go is more than the quota the targets get harder.

In this case NZ had a quota of 103 (then there are convoluted rules around what constitutes a quota spot (eg a 4x100m relay team is 4 spots but a two person beach volleyball team or a Sevens team is only 1).
NZOC only gave Athletics 18 spots. They have to set targets that won't overload that quota. Obviously they assume certain athletes will qualify so adjust the other events accordingly while trying to be fair across the board.
It must be bloody difficult as every event has a different threshold of what appears successful. I would argue that getting in a 100m final is way more of a showing than say 7th in javelin. . NZOC criteria base seems to say 6th or better.
This is where it gets difficult I guess. Do you place a lower threshold on one event than another? I would suggest that certain premier events (either premier for the games overall or for NZ) are allowed a bit more leeway and as long as the process is open most would accept it.
100m is obviously one of these premier events a if an athlete can get in the final then they should go.

I think I am right in saying that only 17 of the allocated 18 athletics spots were used, which is why the sprinters were more annoyed. It definitely seems easier to qualify in some field events compared to 100 m or other track events. Three female hammer throwers were in Birmingham, for example.

And there is definitely avenues for going outside of the qualification rules in special circumstances as well. Everything Athletics NZ did was correct and within the guidelines but they had avenues to stretch those guidelines which they didn't take. Seems like too many arse coverers there. The flipside of selecting non performing athletes is that you cop funding decreases so they are being overly careful.

Not quite Commonwealth Games but worthy of mention. Presumably this entitles the winner to wear the rainbow jersey, the real type that are exclusive to World Champions
