Breaking in another country can be a blessing or a curse, albeit a lucrative curse.

This is magnified if you're a non-American and you 'break' America.

You can be uber talented (controversial on here) like U2 and continually grow your musical repertoire or be pigeonholed into always being known for 1 song (maybe 2)

    Dexy's Midnight Runners
    Simple Minds
    The Proclaimers
    etc
    etc

Psychedelic Furs. Yanks only know them for Pretty in Pink (but they probably do OK from royalties on that song alone)
    Awesome band.

    Exactly

If the song is in a successful / seminal movie then the hole is even smaller

    definition of one hit wonders

Even though Eileen was there second Number One? That makes them at least the definition of a two hit wonder.

    straw poll

    who can name the other?

I have nil all and fuck all chance of doing so without google.

So based on that given my superior music knowledge I think the term “one hit wonder” is astonishingly apt.

    Sound familiar ?

Not sure how a really big band that I’m a massive fan of didn’t get sued for this one.

Simple Minds did some bangers. They were terrific.

The Proclaimers did one big song that everyone knows well despite deep down realising it is absolute shite.

Much like “why does love do this to me?” It seems vaguely tolerable when extremely pissed but when you analyse it you realise it’s just mass marketed crap. Absolutely awful.

Plus the twins fronting the band look like a pair of tired old lesbians nowadays.

This one hit wonder talk is simply based on age, location etc

Dexys other number one was the posted “Geno”. Was massively well known when I was a teen among anyone that followed the UK scene at the time. Many many years later I even went to a Geno Washington gig in Putney on the basis of that Dexys song alone.

I won’t claim to like the Proclaimers that much but again only a one hit wonder at a very superficial level. A whole musical/movie was created with their songs and then there’s this…

    100%

    Fantastic

As good as any National Anthem rendition (and that's coming from a regular singer of the the best of the best)

    Letter from America
    Sunshine on Leith
    I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)
    I'm On My Way

    Great documentary

Fair call. I have heard that one.

    Still unlistenable though.

Catch a pub band in Scotland and you are far more likely to hear them play “I’m on my way “ than 500 miles.
    And everyone will sing along.

One hit wonder for those whose musical sphere is limited to rock and Shrek.

Too-Rye-Ay was one of the first cassettes I bought in the early 1980s. I always thought that their cover of "Jackie Wilson Said" charted better than it did.

Got to No 5 in the UK

Classic Top of the Pops appearance with the crew putting up a photo of Scottish Darts Legend Jocky Wilson instead of Jackie Wilson 🙂
