The preparation for this year's NZ Schools selection and games will start soon. It looks like there won't be games against Aussie Schools this year. If true, that's really disappointing.

This is the NZR media release:

Super Rugby Under 18 Camps to showcase secondary school talent

    6 SEPTEMBER 2022

The next generation of New Zealand rugby stars are currently being identified and selected by Super Rugby Clubs for Under 18 camps set to run across the country.

Each of the five New Zealand Super Rugby Clubs will host and facilitate the Under 18 development camps from October 1 – 5 in their respective super region.

New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) High Performance Player Development Manager Matt Sexton said the camps provide an opportunity for the next generation of rugby talent in New Zealand to be exposed to the High Performance pathway.

“We have an abundance of young talented players across New Zealand, to have over 200 players attending across the five regions is fantastic. The camps will allow these players to be exposed to key elements for a future in professional rugby. We want each individual to be able to walk away from these camps with a clear picture as to what their pathway is and what they need to do to achieve their goals.”

“Once again it is fantastic to have Super Rugby level coaches and management leading these teams, their knowledge and experience is invaluable for young players.”

Under 18 Development Camps will be hosted in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Facilitated by NZR and Super Rugby staff, Under 18 players made up of school and club players, will assemble on Saturday 1 October.

At the conclusion of the week-long camps the 2022 New Zealand Secondary Schools, New Zealand Barbarians and Under 18 Māori teams will be selected. Those three teams will then compete alongside Fijian Schools team in a four-team series.

A couple of schools have publicised their players being selected for the Chiefs U18 camps, so I assume the full squad lists will be released at some stage.

At least the NZS teams will get to play, unlike last year.

Here is the Chiefs U18 Development squad.

Looking at the names, some of the players involved in U19s are younger than I thought to be in the U18s too. Surprised to see Cody Vai in the Chiefs, and not the Blues. I had been told that Payton Spencer is following his father's career path and had signed with the Blues. This confirms it.

No Francis Manuleleua. I wonder if he is committed to RL?

Like a lot of the Kelston boys, Xavier Tito-Harris is another who has been linked to RL. He should be in the NZ Schools team then.

Bit surprised Kiwi Duncan from WBHS made it, IIRC he didn't get a huge amount of starts for WBHS this year, although having seen him play for a number of years, he is a talented kid.

I don't know why, but I am always interested to see if any sons/nephews of past players are coming through. So, Liam Jack, is he related to Graham and Chris?

@Crazy-Horse Haha, I do the same. Sons/nephews/younger brothers or cousins. Always wondering when I see a familiar last name.

Nelson would be under-represented given they won the competition.

The camp will culminate with two sides taking on the Fiji U18s and a Fiji U18 Selection at Taupo’s Owen Delany Park on Tuesday 4 October.

@Stargazer The Napier BHS hooker (Chrystal) isn't there.

When I watched the Lindisfarne-Wesley game their centre Watson also looked like a good player.

@Bovidae I think Tyrone Chrystal is still a bit young. He's year 11 or 12, so he'll probably be in the group, next year.

In Senele (St Pats Stream), Bason (Fielding) and Brown (Napier) that could very much end up being the NZ Schools front row. Hopefully the Canes keep all of them in the system.
