@antipodean I figured that was obvious.

You say obvious but then the desired outcome appears to have passed you by: Speed up or lose possession.

Really happy to see Ioane back at 6. He really has the potential to be the greatest ever in that position. Even better than Kaino.

Reiko is also one game off from being the next Conrad Smith.

Am I missing a joke here?
Maybe Akira can get somewhere near Kaino if he stops taking half a step backwards before going forward.

I'm rapt to see Akira back in 6, especially versus the Wallabies.
Foster mentioned it in his presser that he's a different ball carrier to Frizell and Barrett. The thing is he's actually pretty effective when he decides to go direct in terms of post-contact metres but prefers to use footwork in contact.

I remember Kaino when he came on the scene was more of a wide runner but seemed to change his game in his mid-20's to what made him so successful.

I agree on Rieko, still only 25 and I think finally starting to iron out his inconsistencies after making the move to 13. One of the few things Foster has done well this year is to play him solely at 13.

@No-Quarter Yeah, am fired up to see this backline on Saturday. Really hope to see Jordie's big body smashing through the line off short-balls!

He's better suited there of course. He's not the fastest and can look ungainly joining the line out wide, but in close his running style is perfect for heavy traffic and as a bigger body more effective than the other options. He can also kick, pass and possibly most importantly offload.

Spot on. Run, kick, pass threat plus defends really well. If he plays well he'll give Havili a run for his money at 12 with ALB still to return.

Potential for being a triple threat for sure but before claiming that I want to see his short kicking ability and decision making. Also his short passing game under pressure.
Not knocking the guy as we have few triple threat options and most other don't even show that potential. Just not confirmed yet.

Important test for Akira - needs to put down a marker to be the starting 6 because time (test matches) is running short for RWC.

I'd say the same for Taylor, Papali'i, Ofa, Nepo, Hoskins and RTS.

Any who play poorly might not get many shots at redemption.

unless your name rhymes with Bodie Naylor...who, if he has had personal issues, they shoulda left him out to deal with this, refresh and then come back, instead he is playing poorly, hindering both himself and the team.

    Different forwards coach.

They've left him out for the past couple of games. Now he's got a chance to impress before they pick the EOYT squad.

TBH it's not hard to see why they want him to come good - but, if he plays poorly they might well look elsewhere for EOYT.

@Crucial The Fern is the only place I'm reading much concern about Will's form.

Last week he scored a scintillating try, would have strolled in for another apart from a midfield cock-up, set up the match winner, topped the attempted tackle count :), caught the high balls kicked to him, chased plenty of kicks and kick offs, won a ruck penalty.

Apparently his workrate is a problem...

he definitely got better as the game went on, that run down of Koroibete felt significant.

That last miss was awful though. Almost exactly the same as Clarke's the other week.

(just on the "blown" try it was well defended that turned a 3 on 2 in to a 2 on 2 unless Reiko developed a very big pass because Jordan was fuuuucking wide. Then a flat BB and a shit pass, and it was all over. Not enough credit given to some incredible Wallaby scramble and decision making by the winger)

@mariner4life The miss on Samu was bad.

Pretty sure Will started well. My memory* is that it was him that got in the face of the Aussie catcher at the kick off and caused a fumble and him and SBarrett who then drove an Aussie over the sideline to set up initial field position that led to our early try.

*I haven't watched a replay so I could be wrong about this - a week is a long time for my short term memory. 🙂

@mariner4life Blown try - Rieko just had to run. He might even have been quick enough to score himself - but no-one was getting to him for 15 metres and the Australian defender was completely isolated and BB could have just run past him.

Remember when Beaudy charged out of the line trying for a hero play vs the Irish? The Aussie pulled it off!

And prior to last week? He has been carried for quite a few games on the hope that he finds form.
Yes, last week (apart from the missed tackles) was a big improvement but his kick chase is still hesitant (which then reduces the options for the kicker for later kicks) and he isn't showing the same dominance under the high ball as he has in the past (eg position and strength post catch) even if catching it.
If you haven't noticed his drop in performance this year I think you may be wearing some Red and Blue tinged glasses.

@Crucial He's had a few games without scoring a scintillating try.

Aside from Boks 1, I think he's been fine under the high ball. Since Boks 1 it seems to me that there's been a distinct shift in Will's kick chase game. He's no longer mainly trying to catch offensive kicks, but is copying the Bok tactic and going up one handed to disrupt and knock down.

He did the right thing in passing..just a rubbish pass.

The pass also came a tad late - he took a step or two before passing he should have passed straight away.

He got caught in two minds a little bit rather than picking an option and going with it

Beaudy having only just come on to the field I don't think they were fully in sync.

@Mattasaurus his ability to hit a man through traffic is outstanding, but he needs to vary his game as he makes us too easy to defend.

Put your house on Smith for RWC top try scorer.
