The score is now 26 all!
I guess the three Shield Snorters must have come on.
-
Hurricanes 31 (Du’Plessis Kirifi 40’, Asafo Aumua 56’, Matt Whaanga 63’, Cam Roigard 65’, Brayden Iose 72’ tries, Jordie Barrett, Harry Godfrey 2 con)
Crusaders 26 (Cullen Grace 5’, Fergus Burke 7’, 13’, Melani Nanai 53’ tries, Burke 3 con).
HT: 7-21.Robertson:
”[The most important thing is] we’ve come out healthy and that’s a win.”
The same can’t be said for the opposition. The win came at a cost for the Hurricanes with flanker Reed Prinsep limping off with an Achilles injury and lock Justin Sangster dislocating his thumb.
With first-fives Brett Cameron (calf) and Ruben Love (groin) sidelined with injuries that will see them miss the opening rounds of the new season, Aidan Morgan and Harry Godfrey shared the playmaking duties for the Hurricanes.
Morgan struggled with his kicking game but he came close to setting up a try right before halftime after arcing around the Crusaders backline and tiptoeing down the sideline, only for his final pass to be intercepted by Burke, who impressed in a losing effort.Crusaders hooker Codie Taylor was taken off after just 19 minutes after landing awkwardly on his shoulder but Robertson said that was just a precaution. “It was just a stinger from my understanding and it’s come right.”

A few injuries for the canes for Rd 1
Prinsep ( no doubt that please a few Ferners)
Cameron
Love
Sangster -
Just got back from the game.
A quick summary:
Crusaders very strong in the first half. They dominated the collision and set piece as expected against the Dad’s army forward pack of the Canes. Prinsep got munted a couple times taking the ball into contact and limped off, with Flanders replacing him just before the spell. Standouts for the Crusaders in the first half were Whitelock, Newell and Grace.
The second half Hurricanes were a totally different side. The best player on the park for me today was Cam Roigard, he is a very smart footballer and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a bolter at the WC. First time I’ve seen Peter Lakai up close aswell, that kid is built different and when he came on he absolutely dominated in the carry. Standouts for the Hurricanes today were Roigard, Lakai, Aumua, Delany and Flanders.
@Stargazer I overheard Devery talking to someone sitting next to me and he said he will be back after the Aus trip, so maybe round three. He had minor clean-up surgery in his knee so good news for him.
-
@Canes4life Thanks for your feedback on the game! Glad you overheard Devery say that. It's good to hear he'll be back reasonably soon.

Is that who it was, I was trying to figure out who that was shining out wide for the Crusaders. Yeah he was v good, got on the outside a couple times and showed some real gas, I think one break eventually led to a Crusaders try in the first half. Fihaki on the other hand was hot and cold, hot on attack, but was caught out often on D.
The other player that impressed me from a Canes POV was Harry Godfrey. Had a dodgy first ten but as he warmed into the game he showed what a weapon he could be. He broke the line a couple times when he decided to have crack. With B Cameron and R Love sidelined hopefully he takes his opportunity.

Thanks Mate, Springer has real gas a bit of a weapon.
I am not surprised Godfrey went well he looked very good the couple times I saw him in the u/20s. -
@Canes4life thanks for this. Good to see Flanders stepping up. Lakai was brilliant in last yrs npc so hope he gets game time this year. Will the other players start next week. Knowing the coaches maybe not

Just got home to Hawera after going down to Levin for the game.
Thoughts: Bloody good preseason game, good crowd and Levin Domain looked a picture.
On Players (mainly Canes as they my team)
Adan Murphy at 10 looked pretty ordinary (his kicking out of hand was horrible) and hope it was just an off game from him. Jamie Booth was ok at 9, but not a lot more, rest of starting backline were just ok, looked a little disconnected on defence. Josh Moorby improved as game went on I thought.
Forwards, Coles looked lively while on, was pretty happy with scrum, and I actually though James Blackwell went bloody well (sorry haters).
After the Changes etc I thought Cam Roigard was pretty bloody good and was maybe the spark that set the second half going for the Canes,> Rayasi has got a great left boot ,and used it well from penalty spot a couple of times. I like the game of the young 10 that came on in 2nd spell Godrey? Also the front row went well when Lomax. Aumua and Rakete-Stones came on too.For Crusaders (don't know all players names).
Thought Burke went well at 10 I thought, as well as No11 (springer I think) and Fihaki. Forwards SamW went well, Newell looked good as did I thought Grace and Blackadder at times.
Sorry if I not bang on, just how I saw game, I was actually sitting at top of the stand and really enjoyed whole thing! -

@Dan54 thanks. But Aidan Morgan. Shame. Hope he finds form quickly. As he will likely start next week. Maybe Godfrey will make the 23
Yep I just hoping Morgan had off game, as I like the young fella, just he struggled last night I thought, and his kicking to touch was lucky to make 10-15m, not something I had noticed before lat night.

I thought Morgan and Barrett just tried way too hard instead of keeping things simple. Hopefully they can pull it together for the first proper game of the year.
With Love and Cameron unavailable for round 1, there's a good chance Godfrey will be in that first 23.
Based on yesterday's selections I feel like this will be our first 23 of the year that Holland will pick to play the Reds.

I have. It got better later in the NPC but his touch finding is often terrible. Unless this consistently improves Canes need to find another first.
