how is that even remotely legal? i would love to see the loophole where this ignores the offside rule, the obstruction rule, and the taking people out past the ball rule.

@mariner4life It's actually linked to something that I mentioned a while ago that is becoming more prominent - tacklers getting tackled (removed) off the ball carrier, which is being completely ignored by refs but I can't see how it would be legal.

this is taking it way past that. this is allowing a guy to come from anywhere and "tackle" someone trying to form a ruck. And it's not exactly subtle.

As the article says, they surely got a ruling, so i would love to hear that explanation

Fucking hell, I don't know what that is, but it's not rugby.

well I'm sure if McCaw had done it, they'd be changing the rules to stop him, agree though, technically legal maybe, just looks all kinds of wrong.

@mariner4life if you're ignoring the scenario I mentioned, then it's the logical next step to ignore what Ireland are doing.

Ireland employed a clever tactic at the breakdown against Italy on Saturday, but the legality of the move has been called into question.

    I really can't see how that's legal.

This should be the subject of one of those official law clarifications that national unions can ask from World Rugby. Do it before the RWC; don't wait until it happens in a RWC match.

@Stargazer Hell no! Do it the week you play Ireland so they have to train for another way and have their plans thrown into turmoil if it's found to be illegal.

better yet, get the ref on-side without involving them so they get penalised off the park in the first half, and then don't have a ruck plan any more

they'll just fall back on teh gang tackle and collapse all over the ruck they've been using for 4 years

Doesn't a tackle create an offside line?

    Or just a gate?

    Offside line.

I don't understand why they aren't in breach of 14.8c

    8. Other players must :
    a. Remain on their feet and release the ball and the ball-carrier immediately.
    b. Remain on their feet when they play the ball.
    c. Arrive at the tackle from the direction of their own goal line before playing the ball.
    d. Not play the ball or attempt to tackle an opponent while on the ground
    near the tackle.

I guess the purpose is to avoid an offside line being formed to get around law 14.10? I think it's very flimsy but if they take out the player before they are over the ball, there may not be an offside line?

Offside lines are created at a tackle when at least one player is on their feet and over the ball, which is on the ground. Each team ís offside line runs parallel to the goal line through the hindmost point of any player in the tackle or on their feet over the ball. If that point is on or behind the goal line, the offside line for that team is the goal line.

As most of us have pointed out, you can't go tackling people without the ball. You can't go tackling people who aren't part of the ruck.

I see no way under the laws of the game it can be legal.

Those Ireland odds are unbelievable. What am I missing, they took France apart across the paddock 6 months ago.

NZ odds don't surprise me. Lots of Pommy rugby fans at work and all of them are talking up the improvement in the AB's.

Those odds tell me I can put 100 on france & 100 on Ireland and both will return me more than 200 (I'm not a big better so I could be wrong). If this is indeed the case, that's a sure fire return in my world ....

I kind of liked the idea of not being favourites for a change,

    Well there goes that .

Never having won a knock out RWC game and having to face either the home team France or the ABs in a quarter might have something to do with it......

It's a scam. In their minds the Irish and French know they are tournament favourites. This trying to claim underdog status is feeble and lame
