Well Kaitaia to Cape Reinga and down to Waitangi via Ahipara today and it's been a fucking excellent and beautiful drive, superb roads and smiles on our faces the whole way. Really don't understand the issue, especially having come from London. Glorious driving weather too. Roadworks every so often, but fuck it's no bother.

They can be an issue if there’s cold beer waiting at your destination and you’re stuck in one spot for a period of time but I get your point.

I’ll take a more positive outlook on my drive to the Bay in a few days.

We stopped for an ice cream at the Container Cafe. It was too hot for a pie that day!

@MN5 oh most were just a temporary reduction to 50, a couple to 30 and only one set of temporary lights I think.

Yeah the ones I’m referring to are stopping for 15-20 minutes at a time.

    Niggly.

@MN5 mate that's par for the course in the UK without the need for roadworks. Umpteen million people in a small area will do that.

Cape Reinga flights planned binned. Couldn’t get on!

Let me know (in advance) if you want to do something like that next time. I'm always looking for excuses to go flying up there (if I take a job that I have been offered, I'll have access to a variety of small commercial aircraft up to 10 seats as well as the usual ones available). You would of course have to put your faith in some bloke off the internet - you can pay in advance to my Nigerian bank account that I use to donate millions of dollars to random people that might want it (although we have met, and you do know who I worked for). Even from AKL it's only about 3 hrs return to the Cape in something slow, or 1:30 return from KK. You can pick up one of the beach trips or whatever from Kaitaia (without having to stay there) if you want to be on the ground as well.

@Bones I guess in part it is perception of what you are used to (locally) and how shit things feel like they have become.

Let me know if you are passing through and wanna catch up for a beer/coffee!

Two reasons. One is 9 the other is 11.

I don’t blame them. 6 hours driving in the sun or swimming / boating … it’s a no brainer.

@MajorRage hah, we've hit some fine luck, it's been mildly cloudy with the odd 2 minute shower whenever we've driven. Sun came out as soon as we hit Paihia.

I'll try and guess which bloke you are at Bad Habits later, I'll be looking for young kids.

    No

    Wait

@Bones sweet, if it works...I'll be out from about 2 on Friday though...

@MajorRage didn't realise you were over too, same applies to you, although expect with kids in tow your time is even more limited 😉

@taniwharugby if that's him at the anchorage he's got his hands full and I can see why he's having trouble with driving by the state of his parking.

Shit that's a pretty challenging walk from Paihia to Russell eh. 20km and 5 hours later we had fuck all energy to take a squizz, but seems a nice place with not a lot to it. MR probably would've busted it out in an hour. Rewarding though and bye bye jetlag.

Oh and yeah, if there's a terrain type we didn't traverse, I can't think of it. Crazy variety.

That almost sounds preferable now, fuck it's a dicey trail in some places.

The funniest bit was the 500 odd metres next to the water treatment plant where you couldn't see any path at all and just had to walk along the fence line...which we missed at first due to some fucker ripping the sign down.

The unfunniest bit is a toss up between the 3 or so kms along the road because the boardwalk to the nonexistent on a map "Cherry Bay" is closed, or the near vertical ascent just after Okiato. That's where the regret hit hard.
