Government valuations have just come out and there's been quite a jump across the board.

Every idiot and their dog are complaining that their rates and going to go up ...

I don't know where else to put this, but how the fuck is this possible?

A Victorian family’s Easter weekend in the Gold Coast has ended in tragedy after two men drowned trying to rescue a two-year-old girl.

Dharmvir Singh, 38, and his father Gurjinder Singh, 65, attempted to rescue Dharmvir’s daughter who fell into the pool of a Surfers Paradise resort on Sunday night.

Paramedics rushed to the Top of the Mark hotel on Orchid Avenue at about 6:45pm and found the two men in cardiac arrest following the drowning incident.

It is believed the toddler’s mother attempted to save the child, but that she could not swim, prompting the men to jump in.

Queensland Ambulance’s Gold Coast senior operations supervisor Mitchell Ware said the child was playing by the side of the pool prior to the double drowning.

“It’s believed that that child has lost their footing, causing them to fall into a deeper part of the pool, at which point the two male patients then entered the pool in an attempt to rescue that child and found themselves in trouble at the pool,” Mr Ware said.

@antipodean after reading this, Mrs Boo reminded me of an incident we witnessed not so long ago when we were over on Fraser Island / K'gari.

IIRC we were in the pool/restaurant area for breakfast/brunch at Kingfisher Bay.

A family of not-European Australians were swimming.

The pool is pretty small, but the middle dips down a bit over one's head.

Seems one of the kids got out a little far and panicked when feet lost contact.

Kid started screaming, parents went hysterical, much splashing and wailing.

I didn't get what was going on, but others did and dragged peeps to the edge of the pool.

Can see this exact same scenario playing out here.

An inability to swim compounded by panic.

    Very sad.

Saw that at a river in NZ years back, a joker got completely disorientated , and yelling for help, he was in water of about waist depth, but was panicing instead od standing up!

Same. Went swimming with sharks in Moorea. One of the party was struggling in a quite strong current, started panicking and could have been in serious trouble until others stood up and she realised we were over a shell bank in about a metre of water.

Similarly, I helped an American couple out of a rip - in the lagoon in Raro of all places near The Rarotongan resort. They were flapping around trying to swim against it, my mates and just swum out and got them to float along with us. Which was actually fun so we went back out again and realised similar to your story that the water wasn't deep at all.

Before that I didn't even realise there were rips in lagoons.

@Nepia waters gotta go out somewhere, their rips can be really bad with the entire tide going through one small entrance
