Yes. Mike Lee (chair of the then ARC) - who was promoting the then ARC-owned Mt Smart as the answer to Auckland's stadium issues.

I wasn't a fan of the proposed 2011 stadium and think the Council's caveat was justified.
There's a reason images of stadia are always of a match night, during the day they're all monolithic 13 story high visual barriers. Not at all pleasing to the eye - and they are the good ones. I shudder to think what Auckland would have got.

Democracy has it's limitations and it seems stadiums in NZ is one of them.
IF something dramatic is to be done, then a decision needs to be done, it needs to be stuck by & charged head on through the bullshit that accompanies it.
But we all know it won't happen. Expect another 200mill thrown at Eden Park for something that looks like a dogs breakfast. Ethyl will be happy though.

I've whined about this for years ... cricket & rugby should never be played in the same stadium, they are completely different sports with different sized fields. Rugby field is aournd 70 metres wide. A proper sized cricket is about double that.
Although I'm very pro the waterfront / downtown idea, I get that the logistics and cost make that a tough sell. But at least commit to making Eden Park a rugby only ground ....

Yet one of the proposals (the sunken stadium one) proposes that the Eden Park Trust board is made the owners or majority shareholders of the new stadium (in exchange for selling off their land to pay for the new stadium). Nope, they still won’t budge. Eden park is their baby.

Cheers, yeah you are right I suppose and they have to be fully utilised to be able to get a ROI.
I base my comment really on the new spurs stadium (extensive research) my wife is a lawyer and her firm act for spurs.
I was speaking with the partner about how they will make money (this was at a bahmitzvah in north London in the night of Liverpool v Spurs CL final!)
And they gave me that spiel which makes sense.But spurs are doing so much and are based in one of the greatest cities in the world. It’s not feasible for every stadium to have the same $$ opportunities they have.

She has been a few times. I haven’t had an invite thouhh😡. Been to Chelsea via her work a few times. Invited by her clients who are Chelsea fans and wedged up property owners.
When they had the AB xv vs baabass game there I sorted about 10 tickets for that game but it was not the same demand as a spurs match!
So, she certainly has her uses 😀

just putting this in here - leakage below sea level is not a problem. Most basements downtown do that. It's not a reason to oppose a sunken

Fucking big basement though and adds significant cost and risk.
Seascape, which has just topped out this week, had a construction delay of one year while they sorted out basement leak (and other) issues.
As you say not a reason not to build it, but definitely a negative. Along with the land isn't available, the funding similar and they have underestimated the footprint required.
It's really Quay Park or EP, the other two are poor concepts and pie in sky proposals.
Personally I don't see why we need a roof in Auckland. In 60 years of attending events there I've really only suffered three really shitty downpours
