@Stargazer it might suck, but it is the same as it has been for everyone for as long as I can remember.

@taniwharugby Yep, perhaps SBW asked Owen Franks for tips? 😉

The simplest process is that the suspension is served for games at the same level or above.

@Bovidae so that would mean if you are suspended for the AB's, you can still play Super rugby?

So in theory, you get suspended in last game of EOYT, can play Super rugby, but suspended for first game of June tour?

@Tim That's making a complete joke of the judicial system again. Serving his suspension by not playing a Counties Manukau's preseason game and (possibly) a club rugby game that he would never have played if he hadn't been suspended. I just plain hate it when this happens, whether it's an All Black or a player of another team. Commit the "crime", do the time ... not like this.

It's always been this way. Everyone does it. The alternative is to prevent them from playing at the same level which means they could end up never serving a ban.

It's not perfect but that would prevent international rugby players using club games or provincial games they are never going to play towards their suspensions. And missing a test would be much more significant.

That's what happens in English football where you can be suspended in one competition (e.g. EPL) but still play in the FA Cup or Europe. And vice versa.

Until the 2017 Super Rugby season, it was possible for players suspended by SANZAAR to serve their suspension (or part of it) during a bye if they claimed that they would have played a club rugby game during that bye. From this year that is no longer possible.

In the determination of an incident and the handing down of any sanctions, the committee will now have the ability to exclude any regular season Vodacom Super Rugby byes as part of a meaningful sanction. This means, for example, a three week suspension means a player will miss three Vodacom Super Rugby matches – byes or matches in other competitions are excluded from the sanction.

Glad to see Sonny will be available, to run water for his team mates... 🙂

There's no simple way to fix the suspension rules given rugby is a multi-levelled sport, that has breaks through it for one level and not others.

@Stargazer as @Bovidae alluded to, I think Owen Franks (among others) have used their club game on a bye week as part of a suspension, which a fornt line INternation player would never have played...I suspect coaches probably have a set release for these just in case. Pretty cynical to do it that way, but they aren't breaking any rules.

@taniwharugby How is that relevant to my post? I just showed that things have been tidied up in Super Rugby this season. Owen Franks' last citing & suspension, as far as I can recall, dates back to the 2015 Super Rugby season.

Anyway, back to the point: Queenslanders will be hurling flaming pitchforks Cheika's way on the topic of Kwade, but at least they get to blame NSW for everything when we lose.

Predict the Wallabies will win 1 game against Argentina.

you know, i thought that would be the case, but it's been remarkably quiet on that front. I think they, like most Aussie supporters, have taken too many hits this year to be fucked firing up about anything.

Cheika seems to be on thin ice with a lot of supporters across the board (he's got way more credit in the bank with NSW than anywhere else, and that's probably his job security), and the excuses appear to be wearing thin with more than just the rapid Reds fans.

@Stargazer its relevant because you were moaning about the fact he can play (OP) and how wrong it is, examples were given that this is pretty common.

@taniwharugby The post you replied to contained an example of a competition where it's no longer possible. Never mind.

Also, the fact that it is common (in other tournaments or competitions than SR) doesn't make it right.

@Stargazer I was replying to you OP while you posted your reply...I also posted exactly that about the rule not being great.

    Anywhoo, back on topic.

But that it is common means that the people setting the penalties know what is going to happen, and give the number of weeks with that in mind.

SBW missed one test, and he probably could have done with a warm-up game as he's going to go in cold. Many players would be benched for that.

Seems entirely reasonable for the offence he committed.

Can't say I give too many shits about the SBW suspension, and how it ends up being served.

He got sent off early in a test, and missed the next test.

Whether a shoulder charge to the head is worth a red card and 1 week or a red card and 6 weeks is much of a muchness to me.

His dumb action has had repurcussions.

Not greatly worried about SBW in particular but perhaps there is a case to say a ban issued in professional rugby should be served in professional rugby. (Which IMO would include Counties Manukau pre season.)

    Yes, agree.
Not concerned about SBW scenario in particular.

But they could make their owns judicial rules less ambiguous to save themselves some angst, if they care.

The issue with SBW is whether a club game counts towards the 4 game ban - it shouldn't. If it doesn't then he will miss the game of 3 halves too. Either way, he is available for Sydney.
