@mn5 you aren't keeping your missus in a tower by any chance are ya??!
Na she's nipping at my heels as I climb away from her.

@mn5 ooooh a biter aye! as long as she's gentle and you have a safety word!!
Good to hear the training is going well. Rope work is mean as!
Damn straight homes. Between that, tyre flipping, hitting the bag and, ahem, Pilates I'm loving it!

Sooooo ACC have declined the claim. Seems their position is that the vast majority of hernias are over-time issues, rather than being down to a traumatic event. Absolutely gutted, but I'll be talking to my GP about how I might appeal the decision.
Just because the majority occur in that manner doesn't mean ALL of them happen that way. I did a quick call around to get costs for private care - 11-15k is the approximate price range!! Good to know if we end up looking at legal representation for the ACC appeal. Did get a steer that appeals for hernia related claims have been successful.
But it does feel like they've waited nearly 5 months to tell me something they could have just said up front! On the whole ACC is pretty good (unless you are self-employed in my experience), but there are certainly gaps!!

Thanks heaps JK!! I think going public is an option but I imagine the wait-list will be pretty long, not to mention the chance of getting bumped for urgent (quite rightly) surgeries.
Will see what my GP suggests about appealing, but if there is a option for private surgery for less than 5k I think I'd just pursue that to get it done. 2 more years without being able to lift properly is no life at all ha ha
-
Hold the phone lads! Saw my GP last week and he said don't pursue private options. He put me on the public waitlist and was supportive of appealing the ACC decision. But low and behold I get a call from the Hospital today - consult on Monday to hopefully get something scheduled, or get officially in the queue. Keen to find out if they'll need to cut me right open or do it via laparoscopic surgery. Hopefully the latter, and no fucking mesh for me.
Still no promises of when it'll happen, but to get some swift action has definitely got me feeling more chipper.
Tempted to still appeal via ACC, but might keep that powder dry
-
Hope you get some kind of result soon mate. Really sucks that you have to go through the process and be concerned about costs etc.
How is it just on a daily basis? Is it painful and something you always notice? This happening to a serious lifter like you is like chopping the paw off a lion.
But your optimism and cheerful attitude are awesome mate. Could learn a thing or two from you.

@Rancid-Schnitzel I do get a bit of mild pain, but only when standing up or bending over to pick things up. But being an office monkey means I do quite a bit of the former. Have been very careful with any gym stuff to make sure it doesn't aggravate things - that's worked well so far.
But the hardest bit has been having to be careful when playing with bubs. She loves to get thrown around and play-fight, and that is heaps of fun. Over the weekend I definitely did too much when we went to the beach. But what's the point of having a dad that lifts if he can't throw you around!!
Yeah RS, spot on analogy. Desperately keen to get back to legs and squatting again. Certainly have had ups and downs but on the whole I've tried to stay as upbeat as possible. That is the good thing about bubs, she is a happy little thing so that always perks me up.
Plus I just put on an old-ish workshirt today and my arms can barely fit. Yeah buddy, still sneaking some gains in despite the situation.

You know how they say life can be stranger than fiction...
Had my hospital appointment on Monday. I was hoping to hear what the time line for an op would be, and if it'd be a slice me open or high tech surgery. But fuck me if the doc, and his boss, established that I don't actually have a hernia! what in the actual fuck!
The Senior doc reckons the most likely cause is inflammation of muscle/tendon that tracks across part of the pelvic bone - apparently it's a stone cold bitch to diagnose, and both docs talked about ultrasound interpretation as an art rather than a science. They did all sorts of extra poking and prodding (was a bit cold in the ol room!) and couldn't locate any bump etc that would definitely show it was a hernia. Where the pain was meant it couldn't be a hernia - wish I'd known that a few fucking months ago!
So in a roundabout way ACC declining my claim means I dodged surgery that (apparently) I don't need. They've got me on a course of steroids to try and reduce the inflammation. Not anabolic ones unfortunately so I'm still technically natty lol. See them again in 6 weeks to see how things are going. I think physio is also an option too - ha ha I'm back ACC - how you like me now fuckers!
Stoked that it's not a hernia, and avoiding surgery is really good. But it does feel like starting again in terms of getting treatment underway. Buuuuut... I'm pretty sure I can get back to squatting!! it doesn't seem to aggravate my injury, and when I thought it was a hernia I was dialling back everything. So stoked... but will take it easy until I see how things are shaping up.
I definitely can't bench with legs down - but I am getting used to having my legs on the bench. Miss that extra power and stability though.
So how about that aye - caught between feeling filthy, stoked, and a bit worried that they don't know exactly what is wrong. Will hopefully know more in 6 weeks... stay tuned!!
ps have missed adding about 3-4 chest/back/arms workouts in the last 3 weeks. Caught the spew bug over the weekend and just as I recovered I picked up a cold from bubs. Fark me - life just doesn't quit aye!

That's great news mate. I mean obviously not out of the woods yet, but it's not a hernia and that's a massive positive. Pity they didn't give you the proper roids!
-
After nearly two weeks dealing with a spew bug then flu I got back to the gym. Injury does feel a bit better after the course of roids. But no way I want to ever take prendison/e (sp?) again - that shit was like all the down sides of party drugs without any of the highs!!
But am hopeful it's helped, and that some follow up physio etc will help sort it once and for all. In the mean time I'm bringing legs back into circulation, but softly, softly. Will be doing some mobility and light squats tomorrow - cannot wait! I get no pain, or aggravation after the fact, from bodyweight squats (ATG) and I was still squatting heavy weight before I got the hernia diagnosis.
Watch this space - but ya boy will be squatting again!! FUCK YEAH!!
-
It seems to be. Nowhere as much irritation and better range of movement. Still the odd bit of mild pain, but much less than before the course of roids. As I'm doing a bit more training it can be a bit hard to work out DOM's or other niggles from the actual injury. Taking a softly softly approach though.
In saying that we did legs on Fri and chest last night. Squats were light weight, stayed in the 40-80kg range. With only a couple at 80kg. Things felt really good - but the DOMs!! omg, my hammies and glutes were sore as. Felt awesome to be squatting again though. We did some strict wide grip press also. Again only light stuff - maxing out at 40kg. But my back and shoulders felt swole as the following day.
Last night was waiters, bench and standing KB press. Can comfortably have my feet back down on bench press now. That makes me feel so much more stable, and stronger! Hit 110kg for 5 as the peak set. Then a burner set at 60kg, but with a genuine wide grip, like powerlifting styles. Feels odd compared to my usual grip, which is actually pretty narrow. So I get a lot of tricep work in my current stance. Going wide pretty much takes your arms out of the equation, it's ALL chest. Scored a mean chest pump.
Back to the docs in a couple of weeks. Not sure if they might suggest some physio, but would be surprised if they want to do another round of drugs.

Mint back and shoulders workout tonight. There was water damage at Les Mills so the top floor was closed. That ended any legs or pressing in the power racks.
So we hit a bunch of machines for some decent back work. Seated row, Lat pull down machine, hammer row machine, them Arnold DB shoulder press and then a superset of ezibar curls and DB seated tricep extensions (behind the head, two handed).
Another week or so and it'll really feel like I'm training again. Leg DOMs are gone, and everything continues to feel good. Fingers crossed it continues!

Sup lads! have been trucking along with a couple of sessions in the last week. Man, feeling so much better physically and mentally. Still the odd niggle in the groin region but definitely improving. Have noted that I'm hyper aware that pain in that area can be a sign of man issues. Given I turn 40 this year it's something I guess I have on my mind, would not be funny if the ghost hernia wasn't a strain and it's a twisted pipe or something!! Trying to dial back any hypochondria type impulses!
Anywho, back to the weights. Have had pleasantly tired legs all week, but fark my biddies are still burning from chest day. I've joined my bro in going for a wider grip on bench press. Making it way more chest focused than my narrower grip which used a lot of tricep. The difference is massive in terms of DOMS and the pump. Have probably moved out just over a hands-width, so it's a pretty big change.
But aside from feeling a bit unco as I get used to how the load sits (more wrist flex etc) it feels really good. Will keep trucking with the new style as it's meant to be much better for your shoulders, let alone improved targeting of the ol chesticles.

Have been chugging along lately. Getting in a couple of gym sessions a week. But last week was a bit patchy as we were away.
Injury continues to improve, and I only get the odd twinge now. So that's been really cool, although my bloody back has been a pain (literally) of late. Doesn't impact on any lifting, but if I'm lying down prone and try to get up in the wrong way it arcs up something chronic! to the point where I've got to go limp to avoid a cramp or something. That has been getting better but sometimes it sneaks up on me!
Chest tonight. Rocking a the new wider grip on bench. 5 by 5 tonight after a warm up at 60kg. Working sets were 100kg, 100kg, 110kg, 120kg, 100kg. Then a burner of 60kg for 30... pretty much cardio!
Did some one armed dumbbell rows and floor press. Sets of 8 reps each side with a 34kg DB. First time in ages we've done this one, softly, softly! again, zero worries with my back though. Strange.
Finished up with machine seated pull downs. Sets at 30kg, 40kg and 50kg each arm.Has been awesome getting back into semi-regular training. Hit 40 in June and glad I've shaken my groin injury so I can be squatting again. Definitely an early birthday pressie!!

Good leg sesh last night. 5 by 5 back squats. Worked up to 120kg for the middle three sets. First one felt heavy as! But the next two were hard but doable.
Long way to go but happy things are going ok. Bit i get that lurking temptation to stack on the weight from time to time!! 😁
