How has Gaze come back from that gap after 70mins?

No idea - we were on a two minute ad break INCLUDING advertising for whether anyone wanted to be in the Maori fucking electoral roll. Fuck you NZ Government!!!

@chris-b I was watching the local stream. Cooper saw off the South African who had clearly tired and then Gaze swamped Hatherly (sp?) and caught Cooper with half a lap spare. He looked fresh as a daisy.

@antipodean Our local stream showed the replay of Gaze dismounting at the start-finish and Cooper and Hatherly disappearing into the distance - cut to the ads before he got back on his bike - by the time we came back from the fucking ad break Gaze had caught Cooper.

    Waay too good!

Shame there isnt 20 different lengths they can race and do it backwards, forwards...
Have 150 medals up for grabs, then we would be up there with Oz on the medal table.

Cooper does well to be a world class cyclist - he looks like a young Van Morrison! 🙂

Not to mention the team and individual pursuit and the freestyle and medley relays so ideally suited to mountain biking. Full contact roller derby style racing would be a real crowd pleaser as well, again teams and individual categories.

Van Morrison couldn't ride a bike?

They just showed the Gaze tech stop to change the puncture (might have just been inflate). Was like watching F1, cost him about 15 to 20 secs apparently so pretty bloody good to come back and win.

Sounds like Gaze and Cooper would be happy enough just to set up a boxing ring at the top of the hill and stop off for a couple of rounds against each other! 🙂

Gaze not happy that Cooper attacked whilst he had stopped for a puncture.

@virgil Looks like a good effort.

Not sure about the need to play anthems before the matches - start that at the swimming and it will take four years to get through the programme!

WTF is going with this coverage. There's live athletics going on and I just watched a "segment" of journalists having a fucking race or something earlier in the day, followed by ads.

This is honestly close to unwatchable.

We’ve all but given up. Mainly tracking the results online...

I gave it a go last night for the first time, I fancied settling down in front of the athletics for a few hours. Hopeless, no feel for sport at all. Ad breaks too often and too long, pointless cuts to studio etc etc. Gave up and went to bed. Luckily I don't care about the Comm Games which are a pointless anachronism where some events are very competitive (netball, sevens) and most aren't and it isn't the main focus of a lot of the top athletes who turn up - world class athletes are focused on the Diamond League (late NH summer) rather than this.

"The Gold Coast is currently hosting the Commonwealth Games, which only exists to give white people who are too shit for the Olympics the chance to win medals, making it the Caucasian Special Olympics"

That page is always the highlight of my Facebook experience.
Reading the comments from those offended is the icing on the cake

Some of those offended are worse at your/you're than you are Virg which is really saying something.

I got that distinct impression as well. Not much love lost between the two it appears.

Healthy rivalry to bring the best out of the boys.

They really don't like each other do they? Oh well, always good to have a rival in your line of work.

@sneakdefreak "There is good sportsmanship and there's not, and I feel like that wasn't there today. It's a bit of a shame really, I've got the utmost respect for the guy, still, even with that move.

"That's racing, you can't get along with everyone."

When asked if getting back to win the race after the incident was satisfying, Gaze replied: "the good guys always win".

Cooper also produced the "that's racing" line to describe the dramatic conclusion to the race, but didn't think it was a case of bad sportsmanship.

"I didn't know what was happening. I saw he pulled in there and thought it was quite odd because it seemed like he had all the air in his tyre, I'd followed him all the way down the downhill, so I thought it can't be a puncture and thought something must have drastically gone wrong.

"It's not my job to sit around and wait at that point, that's mountainbike racing, and I thought at that point I was going to have to get rid of South Africa if I wanted a chance at winning so I dropped the hammer up there."

In road racing, if a leading rider has a puncture mid-race the peloton will often slow up to wait for them, but Cooper said no such etiquette existed in mountainbike racing.

"There's nothing like that. I can't think of a situation where anyone would sit and wait. If someone has a mechanical issue, that's rider-error. It's the same as making a poor line choice, it's just part of the game.

"You have to nurse your bike home and you have to have the good legs to get the job done. That's life."
