@antipodean gotta play the ref, just like Sir McCaw

I'm not complaining about the player. I'm complaining the refs are poor.

What a disappointment Aust rugby is now. Their decline is a concern. I believe they can only support three teams (not 4 and certainly not 5) but I wonder now if they even have enough players for three teams.

    How good has Hammington been?

His vision was excellent. Nice speed to the breakdown and good delivery.

Brumbies were rudderless in attack. Their 9/10 combination are inexperienced and pretty lacklustre.

I notice it was Willie Lose as the main commentator. Not sure if I've ever heard an ex pro player calling the play by play. Actually maybe I recall Steven Bates calling a pre season game, but nothing at this level. I couldn't stand Lose on Radio Sport, but I thought he did a fine job of calling the game, once I got passed my bias.

@milk it's funny I had exactly the same thought about Lose in this game. I quite enjoyed his commentary this game having previously hated his radio sport and disliking his Sevens commentary. I really didn't expect to.

Anyone got a video of the cleanout of Pocock that the Brumbies are complaining about?

I've seen it. It's not too bad, Dixon definitely has a hold of his head. But a couple of years ago no one would have thought twice about it. Not sure it's whinge-worthy

When they were going through the period of head rolls auto penalty, it would have been a yellow or at least a penalty. Now the latest thing is tackle height so the refs ignore a ton of neck rolls every game

It happens at about the 43' 25'' mark (replayed around 44') in this video. You can hear the ref discussing it with the TMO after the replay. I think the Brumbies coach has a point, actually, because the ref didn't even talk to Dixon afterwards. He did absolutely nothing after talking to the TMO (who may or may not have given the wrong advice).

Dixon grabs Pocock around the neck, has him in an armlock and pulls him to the ground. The ref had already awarded a penalty for something else (playing the ball on the ground), so no sanction whatsoever. Pocock questions the ref about it and the ref says "I'm not happy with it, but it's a penalty, you know what I mean?". You can also hear O'Keeffe asking the TMO who the player was and the answer, Elliott Dixon (whose body language speaks volumes, by the way. He clearly knew he had done something wrong).

Yeah that's worth a penalty - you can see Dixon goes past Pocock and has an arm over his shoulder to pull him away from the ruck. That ends up with leveraging on the head and Pocock falls awkwardly which could result in a nasty or career ending injury. World Rugby should be stamping that out. If it was a tackle it would be a YC surely?

Still, if he didn't enter from the side he wouldn't have been in a position to get injured...

It's so rich those guys going on about the deliberate targeting of their openside flanker.

Agree. Hated Lose with a passion as a radio "shock" jock. Just couldn't do it. But I've said for years he is more than reasonable as a commentator.

Unfortunately for Willie, in his radio days he chose Murray Deaker as his mentor. By that time Deaker had become a bitter and twisted man carrying lots of baggage.

@crucial and I'm not sure Willie was (or is) sharp enough to carry his deliberately contrary opinions. I'm pretty sure his positions were deliberately contrary to popular opinion in the interest of generating talkback calls (the 90s and noughties equivalent of clickbait) because some of them were really incredibly stoopid. And you really struggle to back up what you don't believe. ... hopefully ...

@booboo People would frequently ring in with quite reasonable and interesting points and Willie would rudely rubbish them and cut them off, when it was obvious their point had whizzed over his head. Came across as a complete tosser, I'm afraid.

@crucial Ran into Deaker about a year ago when I was at a water sport event in Takapuna which is his neck of the woods.
I was quite surprised when he told me he doesnโ€™t listen to any sports radio or ZB,listens to music and plays golf.
I very much got the impression he did not leave on great terms, he did not mince words about what he thought of Tony Veitch which was really surprising given he was well and truly in the corner of Veitch when all the shit with his partner went down.
Just goes to show, they do eat their own..!
