@Bones banks are starting to roll out contactless ATMs so there's that little ray of sunshine.
That’s a bit redundant isn’t it? The point of Apple/google pay and good biometrics is that you hardly ever need your card let alone cash.
-
@antipodean still leaves me short if I stumble upon an Oporto over here and have to eat a dozen burgers.
I can't take that risk.

Tell that to the taxi drivers in Leicester.

Tell that to the cash bar on footy trips, or my local
money laundering operationcash only bakery. -

Taxi drivers are fuckers. Tell you they don’t do contactless. Then tell you their machine won’t connect then finally tell you they don’t have change.
A couple of times I hopped out at home and told them to come back tomorrow when they were organised. -

Tell that to the cash bar on footy trips, or my local
money laundering operationcash only bakery.Covid didn't break your local bakery's cash only policy like it did the majority of the Asian restaurants in Chinatown?
Cashwise, I have a stack of $50s at home because my Mum sends me cash every birthday and Xmas (despite the fact I tell her not to) and a bunch of coins from the old cash only Asian restaurant days that I use for tipping delivery drivers if they give good service.
But other than that I have finally managed to rid myself of cash in Oz after 8 years which has been one of my chief annoyances compared with when I left NZ.

You think I should be aiming for more than a dozen?

I remember the cash only economy in Oz. In particular a cash only Lebanese butchers. Cheap as and really good kofta mince.
When we were there it was a thing that diplomats would buy nice imported cars because they didn’t have to pay the sales and luxury vehicle taxes. You could drive them for the duration of the posting then sell for the purchase price. Dodgy fuckers would come down from Sydney and hand over 40-50k no worries.
I sold our Falcon and was handed cash as well. -

No. The “limit” in the card.
Apple Pay was unlimited when I was there. -

Apple Pay was unlimited when I was there.Huh, go figure, I never knew. So the limit (£100) is only if paying with card using contactless.

Yep. That’s because anyone can find it and use it. The phone options are protected by face recognition or fingerprint so the security is much higher.

yeah, pretty much use applepay for everything now, was a late adopter, I do tend to keep $20-40 in the wallet for things like beers at the footy (they normally do have card payment but can be touch and go...pun intended)
-
Cash was only needed during rugby seasons for smaller club canteens. Most of them now have Square POS as a minimum or bank EFT terminals if they're a larger operation.
Still a shitload of cash in the pub raffle of a Friday, as tradies don't want anything traced
However, I did card-only a couple of weeks back and it was still near expected amounts - only a couple of people refused.
Hang out at the TAB of any pub over here and cash will be in good supply.

I too was a late adopter, until I saw a colleague paying for lunch with his watch and it immediately struck me; why am I carrying cash?
I was caught short on a recent footy trip as I'd forgotten my cards, but that was easily solved by going to the hotel bar and having the cashier run up a sale of a couple of hundred dollars via NFC.

all our clubs definitely have them...where theyre always working is a different story...or as someone that can nip behind the "bar" gabbing a couple of beers and just dropping cash in the tin can still be easier/faster

I've long been a -get-the-buggest-android-phone-possible guy. I left the Apple ecosystem a decade ago and I enjoy a decent amount of screen
However it's now becoming a pain being on Android when the rest of the family is on ios. Certain apps just don't work right.
I was also a little envious recently at the sight of the BIL's small iPhone. It looked pretty neat, and it struck me that I almost never watch anything on my phone. Maybe on a flight, maybe the odd horse race.
Maybe it's time to make a switch
Anyone left Android for ios recently? Scary stuff...
