@Tim (and others) Is there a significant difference between N95 (US) and KN95 (China) quality? I can get the latter for really good money and the former are very expensive. From my brief research, it looks like basically the same thing, just different country rules.
The filter itself is probably fine. Where a proper medical grade N95 (like the 3m aura) differ is the tightness of the facial seal. I bought a few of the kn95 ones early in the original lockdown before I knew any better. But they have gaps around the sides of the face.
All of this is irrelevant anyway, and the average person should not be encouraged to buy proper N95s because they won't be wearing or removing them correctly anyway. Medical personnel get them professionally fit checked and for each different brand as they all fit differently. It is a waste of resources that are needed by the medical sector

I reuse them too. They are intended to stop inadvertently infectious people from sneezing droplets

Question then, if a non-fitted n95 is useless how effective is a sugical mask? Very loose fitting.

A standard or Level 2 mask will stop droplets. But won't stop all aerosols for long. After about 5 minutes they get damp and therefore protection from aerosols diminishes. N95s can last for up to 8 hours of continuous use. To give you an example, I use 4 N95s a day; from the start of day to morning tea, morning tea to lunch, etc. Once the mask is removed we dispose of it as any contact with the front of the mask has the potential to contaminate your body.
I didn't say they were useless. I mean that if you have an N95 and you are constantly taking it off and on, it is getting potentially contaminated. But for a non medical person, who is not in close quarters with infected people ie in their faces, I don't think it is probably massively more effective

And then there would have been the obligatory comment around it needing to be a tight fit. So probably for the best that you didn't

Up your game then. Anything is possible.

So I know who to be angry at when my suppliers can't get me stock and they gouge me accordingly. The mention of N95s and P2s sends people running into their local Bunnings or Mitre10. The funny thing is they are so restrictive to wear, and most of my patients complain about wearing simple cloth or basic surgical masks.
A quick scan of the similar NZH article makes no mention of N95s. Credit to them
