My wife made an interesting comment this morning and it might be more relevant to the conspiracy thread.
"Is this just to have another lockdown because the hospitals are full?"
She is an ex journalist and knows politics and spin well. She is also mostly right (except when I disagree). Her mother is being buried today too, so she has done her research as she wanted to be in the UK.
So is this a new, more contagious strain?
Although I can't blame anybody for doubting a single word which comes out of the UK government or media, I don't buy this one.
The ramifications for the country are simply too deep for this to be bulllshit.

Boris never wanted a lockdown in the very first place. So you have to think the information he has is pretty dire for him to order this now, at such an unpopular time

Was just a thought and I can certainly see why they would do it. The original fear was that the hospitals would be full, and now they are.
As I said conspiracy theory thread really, but coincidental that the new more virulent strain arrived when the beds are almost full.

Govt to pump almost $3 billion into its Covid-19 response after report identified failings
Good to see they are planning for next time
-
@Tim It's great that they are addressing the Reports findings.
It's not so great that they sat on the Report for three months and only released it after Parliament had risen for the summer recess.
The most transparent government ever would surely have released such a damning report immediately so that it could undergo full scrutiny.
I get you would want to be able to release the steps you are taking at the same time as the report but I wonder what - if any - effect this would have had on the COVID election if it had been released immediately. Minimal I'm guessing.
However to minimise its impact by releasing it after Parliament has risen, just before Xmas is pretty cynical politics.

The New Zealand Herald reports the woman is awaiting the results of a test for the virus, but showed up to court anyway - her whereabouts now unknown.

This woman should have her employment terminated for not following the rules and regulations.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of Health confirmed that person had tested negative for Covid-19.
“The precautionary action to lock down the Court was taken by local agencies after some initial reports that the person had symptoms consistent with COVID-19,” The Ministry said in a statement.

Valid point? I guess being in the situation we are in, there is no rush to roll it out, but all it will take is one stuff up at the border and some idiot to spread it and lockdown city.
If these other agencies have approved it, surely ours should follow suit?

Read a Twitter thread (and posted somewhere, either the Overall or Australia virus thread) from the head of the committee assessing the approval of the virus in Aus. Basically given situation here - which is very similar to NZ - nil or virtually nil cimmunity spread, thus lack of real threat, we can afford not to have to short cut protocols to the same degree.
Edit: Heard ScoMo on the radio saying Aus due to commence jabs to priority groups mid/late Feb.

Who knows if their approval standards are the same as ours, and whether the urgency has meant they've cut corners that they normally wouldn't. If we have the breathing space then I don't think it's an issue ensuring our proper approval process is followed. If things were tits up then. it would be a different story.

I suspect part of the delay is that NZ has no workable exit strategy.
If by August the West has vaccinated the 99% most vulnerable (mainly over 50s) and let rest of population roam free, what is NZ going to do about tourism?
In that scenario, the West will have had their summer hols as usual and be in a new normal.
If NZ hasn't vaccinated likewise, how can it open its border?
But if it does, how will Cindy sell the inevitable low level ongoing mortality rate (maybe 100 a year)?
The idea that NZ and Oz are only ones who have got vaccine approval right is risable.

Odds are that my friend won't make it back to NZ in time for his mother to die of motor neuron disease.
Shitty as it gets.
That sucks.
What was his plan, to try and "forecast" the end date then try to bolt home and hope for compassionate grounds to exit quarantine early? Did he ore-book flights and accommodation to do that?
I'm torn whether to book something now to see my mum in March/April regardless, or to try and wait til what looks like the final days. The former meaning I'd likely miss the end, the latter meaning more chance of catching it, but who knows?
Either way it's a gamble, and a $5k / 4 week exercise
And to you it off, the Australian government just announced they are cutting arrival numbers in half again. So there is every chance I'd struggle to get a flight back here again.
Clusterfuck!!!
