Lockdown/Covid Check In

@Nepia They made the decision to close very early in lockdown. Need overseas tourists to make their business model work. Unsupportable if relying solely on domestic diners Shame.
I was able to get there one last time just before Covid and the Bay is still rich in dining options.
So it turns out Elephant Hill is reopening kind of. 3 nights a week only. Looks like Black Barn’s exec chef is running both. That bodes well I think.

Going to bed. 😭I feel your pain. My birthday is on Thursday, just when the bloody lockdown starts.
Boris? Eat a bag of dicks (I think that’s the term).
-
@Catogrande paaah you get actual lockdown for your birthday, I got the annnouncement and a whole shit ton of other stupid drama no one needs upon their borthday.
-
Stay safe my fern folk. What a load of dung
-
@R-L Is it really your birthday? Many happy returns. What else did you get (apart from 4 days of freedom before the sentence begins)?
-
@R-L happy birthday chick!
Time to give 2020 what it deserves...
-
@taniwharugby I have a sneaking suspicion that in 12 months time 2020 will seem like the good old days.....
21 is shaping up to be a bitch of a year for many. Economic reality bites, CV still out of control with people just exhausted by it all.
Happy belateds @R-L
@Catogrande enjoy yours man. Listening to Gove this morning your Xmas is shaping to be a sack of shit.

negative fulla!! Trump said a vaccine will be available in a few weeks.
But yeah...I def think people are over it, and as such not doing anything to help themselves or the rest of the population...I use the app most of the time, but clear many others dont.

You're probably right economically - but only some sectors I suspect. Whether they drag everything down is another question.
I'm getting more hopeful we'll get a vaccination that will lessen the effects of Covid this year. That said, once a vaccine is available, the risk profile for going out changes and may hit the economy again. Right now we take a risk as there is no alternative; if a vaccine is around the rational play is to wait for it to arrive and not go out. Goddamn would be nice to have something to look forward to though
We live in uncertain times. Kia kaha everyone

Building sector seems fine, we are busy and most builders I deal with are too. Many are booked out well into next year. People have cash to spend that would normally have gone towards an overseas holiday. Also with banks dropping interest rates to record lows it’s encouraging people to spend. Not too mention all those returning kiwis, they need a house to live in.
-
@Virgil yeah all the ones up here are flat out, although spoke to a couple last week and they said leading into the election they had quoted less (for next year)
But know people at 2 of the main car dealers and people are buying new cars (not all on finance)
I've gone the other way, decided not to get another car, just re-fixed part of my mortgage, extra $$$ in my pocket while still paying more than I need to.

@taniwharugby same here in Oz, people are cashed up from no spending and gov stimulus keeping wages going, and there is also no stock anywhere, not just in cars., same for furniture, anything produced offshore.
Buying my kid a new guitar for Xmas, and a big store here says they are getting 2 guitars total per month from Fender. Just 2!!!

Pushbike shops have been doing a roaring trade during their traditional slow period. Went shopping for a new dirtbike for the wife about a month ago and there was no stock on the floors. So people are spending money.

Shows how little people save, in NZ car sales are through the roof, house prices the same, lots of renovation work going on. The money that isn't being spent on holidays abroad is being spent on other things instead

confidence on the street (at least the streets I walk or drive, I mean it's Auckland of course) seems pretty buoyant. My accountant thinks it will get tough in Q4, but who really knows. If things get bad next year there are lots of people who will be in the shitter based on the spending going on. Mortgage holidays are ending or over too so that money will need to be paid back

Does that mean people have changed their savings pattern? I agree with the rest of it about where disposable income and spending is going but you would think that the savings level would be the same (not saying that it is high, or even enough - just that it might well be the same).
There is also a phychological aspect - new toys make people feel better in what has been a really shitty year. Personally I would be paying off any debt but I'm pretty conservative. A mortgage free house is better than a new car to me.
