Is Cane getting a bit of a pass here regarding his captaincy? Sure the Chiefs have been ravaged by injuries but they had that game. If there is one area you'd expect Cane to be able to lead from it would defending a lead. Instead all they could do was wilt under the pressure.

I guess it's better he gets the experience through the Chiefs rather than the ABs.

I can't suggest with a straight face that the refereeing was quality. Seemed to me from the outset there'd be a game defining howler when they walked out onto the ground and then worked out the comms were a bust.

two late thoughts after watching the highlights

Loved collins mind games at the end, running into the maul so the chiefs would think we were going for an all in drive....and the nuggie plays it...

and i honestly think sio almost forgot to put it down...

Collins joined the maul in front of the last bound player...

i am convinced the last penalty that gave the Highlanders the opportunity was bullshit

i can't justify that comment with anything, i just want to feel like we were stitched up

    can understand that feeling

    Yeah it's not great.

that is the weird thing about announcing a captain so early...set yourself up to look a bit silly if he has a bad season and some young bucks come through

Hmm, I stand corrected. Must have been an earlier one. I was a few beers in by then.

Also; providing evidence for your assertions is a bannable offence.

    @Toddy

I think Cane is getting a bit of a pass for his play. He gave away two penalties, plus the YC, missed four tackles (although made 15), and ran for piss all (1 carry, 2 metres).

So, he becomes the last of our quality players to drop into a form dip.

A few things I still don't get - they didn't bring on Cruden, hoping that Trask would close it out. I'm not sure why, especially as he was starting to fall off tackles (he missed 4).

The replacements may as well have not even shown up.

Geldenhuys stat line is a fucking tragedy: No metres, no carries, no passes, 3 tackles made, 1 missed, conceded 3 penalties. Yes, that's right - led the team in poor discipline off the bench. Beer earned.

Thomson is only slightly better: No metres, no carries, no passes, 4 tackles.

TTT: No metres, no carries, 3 passes, 1 tackle made, 3 misses!

Tupaea: No metres, no carries, no passes, 4 tackles, 2 misses

    Takei'aho: 3 metres, 1 carry, 1 turnover conceded ( a big one too), 5 tackles, 1 missed, 1 penalty.

Definitely helps. Keep that as long as you live.

Bob Deans in 1905. I wasn't alive but I harbour the grudge well. John Dallas was the ref in case anyone wants to join in.

is it true Nel is playing club rugby, he's been great of otago previously, thompson did some good work when at the highlanders but surely a young guy coming through should get the start

Here are two other stats to show how far away from quality that Chiefs bench was (via rugbypass):

    • the Landers got 85 metres run out their replacements, the Chiefs got 8

    • the Landers subs missed 2 tackles, the Chiefs subs missed 11

I had a look at the last try again and I think it is a bit rough to blame ALB. It was Trask's actions that caused ALB to have to come across. Bad communication I guess (and some inexperience).
Trask has the 1 channel covered just in case but when the maul shuffles over he doesn't, instead he joins the back of the maul without putting any weight on it.
Smith is on the opposite side digging the ball but sees that there is now a massive hole so presumably makes a call and runs around there. ALB sees it happening and it is high risk to leave it to Trask who is only going to side tackle at best. Meanwhile the player outside ALB is ball watching and not noticing that his mark has changed direction. He is the one left looking stupid as he had no clue what was happening.

This situation also highlights that the two phase protocol is a stupid arbitrary line.

I'm yet to see that there is a (maximum) two phase protocol. Someone posted something up from the 6n and while it mentioned two phases, it certainly didn't cite that as the maximum cut off point.

Oh and it was Tupaea. Those two misses were very expensive misses.

"Right decision, wrong process" doesn't exactly scream screwed. Nice to have some clarification though... even if it does seem hard to trust considering who it's from...

"Right decision but wrong process," Lawrence tells Newshub

"I think everybody who understands rugby realises it was the right outcome...."

the chiefs were no more hard done by then we were when it was missed the first time, all even

I get what you're both saying, but the try should have stood. Chiefs would have been up more and unreachable if it was given, like it should have been. Pure bullshit. Also considering you guys are both Landers fans and I'm a Chiefs fan we're not gonna see eye to eye either way.

I certainly wouldn't be crying of it was against my team.
