@nzzp yup, players get pinged if they dive on someone in general play like that but is ok over the try line.

yep, but the context is different. Try scoring can involve weird body positions and contacts as you try and stop the ball getting grounded - or position for loose/dropped balls. Players commit hard as it's the last thing that happens, and post-scoring contact will happen.

There is a certain irony in yesterday afternoons cliff hanger.
Running along the end of Waikato Stadium is a wonderful wall mural recording Waikato and Chiefs history. On this wall is a page on the Chiefs which recalls the successful 2012/13 years. It mentions the coaches Rennie and Smith, which of course is correct, but omits the forwards coach ,the very unsung Tom Coventry. That he has helped coach the Blues forwards in their latest victories over his former team is probably worthy of mention.

@nzzp I'd say there are a fair number that just dive needlessly, fortunately the majority of these end with no injury, but yesterday showed how a clumsy act can result in injury.

If I track back 50 m, I'm goddamn diving. Not doing all that work for nothing.

    Also, I'm a prop.

Also, check out Larry Allan. Dude weighs 150kg or so for context. Massive.

As irritated as Chiefs supporters may be by the final penalty, the first try was a disgraceful abrogation of Pickerill's application of the laws.

That looked so obvious to me when watching the game.

It was obvious but had no effect - if a defender was taken out, I would have more sympathy, but he went so early and got his timing so wrong that it literally had zero impact.

Sure it might be a technical penalty but no different to a player (e.g., 1st 5) being within 10 m of a lineout, and being rightly free-kicked.

    @Stargazer

Sports Ears gives you 3 options:

    (1) Refs
    (2) TV commentary/Refs
    (3) TV commentary

I always use option 1. Only available for SR and AB tests.

'Zero effect' isn't quite true either.
He is a decoy runner. You only run a decoy to have an effect. While there may not be any physical obstruction, he drew the attention of defenders while in an illegal position. That look and hesitation can be all that is needed to create a half gap.
If you look at that photo that was posted you can also see that the runner hesitates to stay available for a pass right on the advantage line. That certainly draws more attention than coming from well behind when defenders know they have time to react to what is in front of them.

@Bovidae Yes, I know, but if Sports Ears isn't available, than radio commentary is better than nothing.

The biggest turnaround in 2012 to the previous regime was the performance of the set piece, and the Chiefs becoming accurate at ruck time. it was noticeable from about Round 3 that the team had changed significantly

NZ referee boss Bryce Lawrence said in an interview on newshub that Pickerill made the wrong call as Goodhue was off his feet. Twice in two weeks.

if the two muppets hadn't completely fucked up the Cruden cross kick it wouldn't matter.

But Pickerell will continue to be named as a ref in SRA. He needs to take his L plates back to club rugby.

Didn't he mean Kaleb Trask was off the ground when he was tackled after a botched blues defensive lineout immediately after a yc warning. Tackled in the air, yc handed out right under the sticks.

I thought that was the most galling forsaking of the laws, of the many on display.

Full credit to the players giving us a decent finish in spite of a woeful game of refereeing.

@Yeetyaah did they show that angle?

I didnt see any other angles, but it certainly appeared something not quite legal must have happened under there.

To my eyes the ball was short, but Goodhue off his feet so another penalty.Sad to say these incorrect calls at this part of the game are common place, players not supporting their bodies, but the human error factor of referees unfortunately cost teams big time.
Really all you can say is bad luck Chiefs for two weeks on end ,.....beat the Crusaders next week and hopefully all will be forgotten!
