A thread that is a safe space* for you to air those thoughts you keep in your head because you know people are going to look at you funny when you say them out loud.
For instance
I just head the new Pearl Jam song. It's garbage. And it cemented in my mind that Pearl Jam, a band that has sold more than 85 million albums, are the most over rated band of my generation.
Their first album, lauded as a modern classic, is for the most parts pretty mediocre, and only did any good because they were the safe, middle of the road, commercial "grunge" act. Their 2nd album was far better with far less acclaim, and their good work pretty much ended there. That was 1993. Since then? 9 deeply ordinary middle-of-the-road rock albums.

*this won't be a safe space. There will be multiple pile-ons

Pearl Jam are shit compared to other bands of that era. So are Nirvana.

easy. Nirvana have two pretty great albums. The Kurt Cobain myth is the most annoying thing about them.

I like 10, Vs and some of Vitology.
Always been a fan but never my favourite band. Seem them a few times live and it was good.

Oh definitely. Kurt will always have a warm spot in my heart cos I learnt some of his tunes on the guitar ( I play left handed too ) purely to hook up with chicks.
But they are massively overrated overall. Yet another rock star dying early and improving the aura when in actual fact he wasn’t that amazing

Untimely death can be great for record sales and legacy

There is no answer here.
There is the middle ground of popular bands you like
The overrated are poplular bands you've heard too much or don't really like anymore/never have liked
The underrated are not so popular (in one's eyes) bands that you really like.
I think Janes Addiction are under-rated but holidaying in LA suggests otherwise. I think Metallica is over-rated.

@MN5 Kurt Cobain is one of the more successful marketing creations ever
Which from what I’ve read about him he would have despised

another piece of marketing. Kurt played a part if it suited him

Keeping to the music motif...
Electric Light Orchestra produced some of the best music in the world during the 70's and 80's. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius.

For a band that Pretty much single handedly Invented metal I don’t think Black Sabbath get their dues compared to others
wait, what? Massively lauded given their niche. And still regarded among the greatest bands of all time, despite not having broad market appeal.
I think their place in the pantheon of great rock bands is secure, and also their placing is pretty much bang on.

bloke definitely had issues. A drug problem and a toxic relationship will certainly help that along.
It's the anti-commercialisation, anti-popularity thing that i think is hugely over played. Shit like coming out well after Nevermind has made a bucket of money and saying he thought it was too commercial, despite having a massive hand in the production.
