Maybe Newell or Ben Lopas for a propping spot
And Louie Chapman as 3rd HB -
Gilbert won't be playing (ACL)
All Barretts are contracted to Taranaki (Scott since 2017)
If with Gawler, you mean Christ Gawler, then he's with Taranaki, too (already was in 2019) -
Tokolahi is playing for Southland.

I wasn't sure about S Barrett hence the big pile of locks in my squad. Wasn't up with the prop defections though. Who else was in or around the squad last year in terms of props?? Could be a little thin out wide again with Gilbert out and Ennor the regular centre. Hopefully McLeod plays 12 though (sharing time with Poihipi) and we only use outside backs in the outside backs. Still leaves Bridge, McKay, Mataele, both Punivais and Burke (at 15) who can be used there. Burke and N Punivai are more natural at 10 and 13, though.

Itβs been mentioned in other threads that Isi Tu'ungafasi transferred from Northland to Canterbury.

You can find the 2019 Canterbury squad here: http://www.canterburyrugby.co.nz/newsarticle/80030?It looks like the props were:
Michael Alaalatoa (has returned to Manawatu)
Harry Allan
Oliver Jager
Daniel Lienert-Brown
Siate Tokolahi (has signed with Southland)
Owen Franks (has moved overseas)
Joe MoodyI haven't looked at props that weren't in the squad, but may have played, last season.
-
Tamaiti Williams ?

I meant other than the guys already listed, of course. Like in pre season games.

Pretty sure Conan OβDonnell has signed with Canterbury. Been playing prop for sumner.

Players Selected in the North vs South fixture are unavailable for selection

The biggest news is two players have been selected from Marist Albion, for the first time in any kind of wider squad for God knows how long. OK, Mataele hasn't quite come up through the grades at M-A but presumably Mellow has. It'd be much funnier if Mellow was playing for New Brighton.
-
For everyone, who doesn't want to go through a metre long list:
-
So, with Knewstubb in the squad, even Canterbury is benefiting from the release of All Blacks 7s players.
-
No Fergus Burke. Injured?
-
@Bovidae This is only for the Heartland-Ranfurly Shield defence. Maybe the rest of the players will be added later? Or, indeed, injured.
-
Looks like Bill Fukofuka has left Southland for Canterbury.
Blake Gibson's brother is also in there.
-
From the media release:
Kick off for next Fridayβs Ranfurly Shield clash against North Otago at Rugby Park is at 2:05, with the match being shown live on Sky Sport. The game is also sponsored by Luisetti Seeds. The full Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup side will be announced on August 26.

Haha, this is the reply from North Otago on Facebook to the Canterbury squad naming:
Canterbury Rugby Don't worry team, we'll have plenty of room on the bus for the Log O' Wood. Would look nice in our trophy cabinet beside the Meads Cup π

Fergus Burke is injured, I am not sure of what the time frame for his recovery is.
Rueben Thorne did say in a podcast they would not select some SR players as well as Players selected in North v South game, but look at some other players for this game towards looking to fill some squad Places. -
@Chris By the way, it's good to see that Cullen Grace is already on that list. May as well chuck him into the "South" squad if he goes well this Friday.

Yeah great to see him recovered.
I hope he gets added to that South squad. -

-
There are a number of SR players not in the South squad, and not in this side. Also Ngani Punavai and Josh McKay. DLB? Perhaps the Highlanders' Canterbury contingent are being given a rest.
-
I wonder if Mitch Gibson will have better luck with injuries than his brother?
-
@shark Hugh Renton posted on his instagram that he's moving to Tasman. He included a
in his post, so I assume he'll play for the Mako, this year.
-
@shark Lock Will Tucker briefly trained with the highlanders but he's now signed with otago for the mitre 10

Thanks for that. He's another who's absence I was going to question.
I'm starting to wonder - tongue semi-firmly in cheek - if there's some kind of anti-Catholic sentiment at the CRFU?!
It's literally been years since anyone from Marist Albion had made a senior Canterbury squad, until yesterday, and pretty much every decent player to come out of St Bedes over the last few years has had to move elsewhere for opportunity...Alaimalo, Lentjes, the Tucker brothers, Elliot Dixon, Michael Leitch....can I claim Josh Navidi??
-
@shark You could claim Jamayne Isaako as well or does playing league not count?

FFS @Chris-B does your chequebook have no boundaries?
-
@Nepia I hope we've signed him on a per games played basis!
We have shed quite a few All Blacks from our squad in the off-season - Crockett, Squire, Perry, Taufua (a would've been) - so we've doubtless freed up a bit of cash.
I'm looking forward to seeing who we're signing as new loosehead props!
Know of any good ones going spare?

He'll be bloody cheap, unless you're paying his medical insurance premiums.
TBH, he looked ok as he got a bit of gametime, which was when both the Canes and the Magpies dumped him, so I think he'd be a decent pick up for you guys.

He went to Shirlay?
-
@shark Finished at St Bedes.
-
@African-Monkey good lad then.
-
By the way, thoughts on the new Canterbury jersey?
At first glance I thought they'd brought back the 1993 - 2002 (or so) jersey, which I disliked immensely at the time as it always evoked memories of losses to the likes of King Country, but now I look back on fondly as the jersey Canterbury wore not only during some dark times, but during the rebirth of the province as a national force.
Alas, this new jersey just has a graduating fade. And it looks shit.
Give me plain red (actually, scarlet officially) and black hoops, any day and all day thank you. No white bits, no yellow trim (what a horrific combination red, black and yellow is) and certainly no graduating fucking fade.
Hopefully the training tee or alternate jersey are worth a look.
-
@shark I don't think they were wearing a new jersey, last Friday. It looks like the jersey they usually wear during preseason games. The only thing that looks different is the white band with the sponsor's name.
Compare: first, a photo of last Friday's game; then the video of last year's preseason game against Tasman.
-
@Stargazer Well done, and I hope you're right.
