I should have said I've always used a Mac at home since inheriting a Macintosh SE in the early 1990s, so have bought a few different models since that time. I currently have an iMac running High Sierra.

@Kirwan I always update the security releases but there seems to be less and less of those for the older macOSs. Not a surprise.

@JC I still have a few 32-bit applications which aren't supported in the later OS versions, so access to those files would be lost. I also use QuickTime occasionally.

Can you install an older 10.x instance in a virtual machine? Then you could have the best of both worlds.

Possibly. I haven't looked into it.

I know in the past I have been forced to buy new software that no longer worked after an OS change, and that pisses me off on principle. 🙂

There's also a shortcut to turn text to audio. If you chain together the Live Text from a photo with the shortcut you can actually get your device to read out what your camera is seeing.

Yeah, Apple is particularly impressive with accessibility features like that.

Did your kid hand you a print out with the last bit written in pen?

To be fair to the school, the Pro was just one option. They also said we could just get him an Air if we wished, which would have brought the total cost down to a bargain $1700 all-in...Stupid machine better last him all of high school!

On the plus side, hopefully he uses it for some music recording stuff, I understand most software works better on apple ?

Get the air, you really don't need a Pro for schoolwork and porn.

It should last the entirety of high school, I still have 7 year old pro I use to play games via Steam that works fine.

I got my son the pro, the idea being is it'll last six years for the rest of school and maybe even university.

I wouldn’t go for the pro, presonally. Kids laptops get a thrashing, they’re more likely to physically die than become obsolete from my experience of 15 years IT!

Definitely depends on the kid, my son looks after his tech. Undiscovered country comes next year with my daughter.

Edit: Finished counting my fingers and toes; 30 years in IT 😉

@kirwan My niece has a pro. She has literally carved a TikTok logo into the lid with a compass or something. But that’s OK, her poor old Dad can buy her another one, I mean he’s old so why does he need both kidneys?

    it's a scam!

We 'only' had to get TR Jnr a Dell Chrome book, and glad I went down the route of a refurbed one, cos the little so and so barely took it or used it, uses the school ones (also Dell Chrome books) when he needed to!

One thing we did do though, was went to an Engraver and had his name and mobile engraved on it, just in case it vanished or the most likely scenario, he left it somewhere (which turned out to be home)

I actually flinched reading that. I've already said to the wife it needs a case for her.

A question for those who have a MacBook, iMac etc:

Have you routinely updated the macOS when a new operating system is available?

The reason I ask is that I have deliberately not done so for two main reasons. (1) I know that some of the software I use won't work on the latest macOS, and (2) based on discussions with Apple techs their recommendation was there was no need if your Mac was working as you need it.

always good to search for how much spare memory you really need and whether others had problems installing, e.g. the Big Sur installation often required a lot of extra drive space and could hang...not always a safe move to be an early adopter!
I'm not sure what version you are on and lately I've been turned away to other OS but from memory (bad pun) some recent versions claimed performance improvements..Apple did have some criticism for taking out features of some apps in upgrades a few years ago..e.g. iMovie...

WBHS has no device required, which I like.
