The guy who broke into Pelosi's house, and assaulted her husband with a hammer, was a Berkeley hippy who went QAnon. Many such cases, especially with meth use and covid lockdowns.
It's a disgrace - similar to the attack on Ardern's office. No matter your opinion on their policies or political stance, democracies fail when violence arrives. The republicans should have condemned the Pelosi attack strongly, and didn't appear to.
-
@nzzp sorry that's rubbish. It has been condemned. It should never happen. Not a thing conservatives would do. Beat someone with a hammer. That's more Antifa type stuff. We are too busy working.
I also heard he was illegally here in the US from Canada but of course is in a safe place, SF, a sanctuary city.

If so, it slipped past. Don't care the political leanings, it's just intolerable.
Lawlessness feels like it is on the rise. Got held up yesterday in Auckland by a massive gang funeral procession. Not a policeman in sight. Ram raids are crazy and getting really close to home ... seems to be a worldwide problem

Yes you are right and this is one of the problems that is going to lead to the republicans taking the house next week. People are fed up with the crime and a lack of law and order and liberal persons and policies that seem to support it.
The sad thing is that conservatives/republicans are starting to question law and order due to politicization of it. Especially at the Federal level but that's another animal.

anyone got a good summary of how the mid terms have gone? generally red but possibly not as red as some thought is kind of the vibe id seen
-
@Kiwiwomble generally have not gone as good as Republicans hoped but they should gain the house and possibly a split in the Senate. There will be a runoff in Georgia with both candidates getting around about 49% each. Have to get 50% to win. Basically it's a divided country. DeSantis won by close to 20% and with Trump criticizing him that will seal Trump's fate in 2024. DeSantis is well liked on the right.
Hope this is a good summary.

I think Trump's ego will make him run.
He will get the nomination ahead of DeSantis because there are so many in America totally loyal to only him, and then proceed to lose to the Dems.
If, by chance he doesn't get the nomination, I think his wrecking ball personality will divide the base.Really hope he doesn't run, because DeSantis would be the left's worst nightmare.

Why do you think he'd lose to the Dems? They still have no candidate outside of Joe and Kamala , pretty wild really. Amazing that Joe is only $6 to be elected POTUS again. He'd be prez at age 85 in 2028....
BTW Ron now fav - hopefully stays that way

I just think the country will want to move on from him. He was hot in 2016, but now????? You're right that the Dem have no strong candidate.
DeSantis would thrash Biden, whereas Trump is about the only Republican who could lose to him.
Can you link me the info' saying DeSantis is the preferred candidate of Republican primary voters? His margin of victory in Florida was incredible.
Just adding a comment I read from National Review -
"Serious question -- how does the party move on from Trump?
I'm not hopeless, but evicting Trump is easy to say, very very hard to do. I kinda thought losing in 2020 would do a decent job of it, especially considering his behavior post-election. But no.
If he announces his candidacy, the media will spotlight him constantly. They LOVE having Trump in the news; good for business, bad for Republicans, it's a win-win for the press. He is guaranteed favorable air-time for the next year and a half before the campaigns even start.
During primary season, is he going to take himself out? He could lose every single primary, and he will never stop his personal campaign. He won't pull a Sanders/Bloomberg/Warren and step aside to make sure the GOP wins.
The Democrats do not have loose cannons. They make sure you work for the best of the party, or you are OUT. Trump is not forced into such loyalties. He plays until he decides he doesn't want to play.
I guess the key is his "base" followers. Those people need to be convinced that he is toxic and hopeless. His following needs to dwindle to nothing. But I'm not sure his followers work that way --- many of them likely don't care who wins if it's not Trump. They think the system is broken, and only Trump can fix it. If he isn't elected the D & R is just window dressing." -

I agree that DeSantis should thrash Joe - I'd also expect Trump to do the same if given another go though, I just think there is a further well of evidence of mental decline that surely is impossible to ignore for all but the staunchest Democratic voters or Trump-haters.
DeSantis not fav to be the Republican candidate, but he is fav to win the election (small chance he runs as an Independent?
Also - Kanye at $31 to be the nominee, wtf, who is punting on that??!!!!

This is not an endorsement, but given that the Dems haven't done as badly as they might have, Biden at $6 is not a terrible bet.
