@gunner Think those involved teams that really struggle and typically play 2nd grade.

@nogusta Unfortunate to hear - Auckland forward play seems to be the best thing about the team.

@nogusta I wonder if he is being lined up to coach the Pacifica Super team next year?

That's a shame, I was hoping he'd move to the Blues. Has definitely improved Auckland forward play.

Auckland Rugby revolt: All Blacks threaten to quit, coach resigns after review

                      7 Apr, 2021 05:00 PM
                      By: Liam Napier

All is not well within New Zealand's largest provincial union.

A review into Auckland's provincial side, and subsequent feedback from senior Blues management, has allegedly led to the resignation of an assistant coach and the potential exodus of headline All Blacks to rival unions.

The Herald understands discontent within the Auckland squad that lost last year's Championship final at Eden Park to Tasman has seen several All Blacks, including Blues No 8 Hoskins Sotutu and prop Ofa Tuungafasi, approach rival unions.

Seeking to exit the Auckland team, Sotutu is understood to be in talks with Counties Manukau while Tuungafasi has approached Northland.
Counties have also signed former St Kentigern College first XV captain turned Blues midfielder Tanielu Tele'a from Auckland.

Fellow All Blacks Caleb Clarke, Akira Ioane and flanker Blake Gibson are understood to be among others weighing their futures with Auckland. Ioane is thought to have told Blues teammates he could represent Northland, as his grandfather on his mother's side lives in Kaikohe.

Clarke's father, Eroni, played 150 games for Auckland and now serves as the union's president.

The review and later feedback from Blues chief executive Andrew Hore is believed to have conveyed fractured relationships between some players and coaches and the need for better communication channels.

Last week, Auckland Rugby staff were told that assistant coach Filo Tiatia, the former All Blacks and Hurricanes loose forward, has resigned.

The poor performance of Auckland's lineout – ranked 12 of 14 teams last year - also contributed to Tiatia's exit, the Herald understands.
Frustration around last year's player payments, which were eventually made in full after Auckland's $120,000 funding cut by New Zealand Rugby due to the Covid-19 impacts, are believed to have contributed to unrest within the team.

Auckland Rugby Union chief executive Jarrod Bear confirmed Tiatia's departure to the Herald. Moving forward, Bear said the union will take a proactive approach to making changes within the team environment.
"We made an announcement to our community this week that Filo has resigned," Bear said. "We've acknowledged over the past three years he's had a massive contribution. He's generated three semifinals, two home finals and one championship in 2018.

"He's been big across our coaching development space so we wish Filo all the best for the future.

"Through the review, we identified some areas we're going to improve, evolve and change.

"There were areas within the coaches as well as the wider management team where we can improve, along with making sure we provide clear direct feedback to the players around selection and their development.
"There were a number of different areas we identified as work-ons.
"We've committed to the players that we're going to be advancing the high performance environment to support them so they can be the best they can be."

Auckland captured their first title in 11 years when head coach Alama Ieremia, the former All Blacks second five-eighths turned Hurricanes assistant and Samoa head coach, and forwards mentor Tiatia came on board in 2018 to seemingly transform the previously struggling team.
Auckland have since lost one semifinal and last year's home final, both against Tasman.

Well-placed sources allege that relationships within the team have deteriorated since that breakthrough title in 2018.

Tensions appear to have built during the past two seasons, with some long-serving support staff understood to have emulated the players' concerns.

As well as those players wanting to leave Auckland now, one source pointed to Vince Aso's departure to Wellington in 2019 and former assistant coach Tai Lavea's abrupt exit to Counties following Auckland's 2018 title success. Lavea had been earmarked as a future Auckland head coach.

All Blacks and Blues flanker Dalton Papalii also switched from Auckland to Counties last season.

Bear said the Auckland squad is 90 per cent complete for the coming season but confirmed the likes of Sotutu and Tuungafasi, both of whom are local, homegrown All Blacks, could leave the team.

"There are a couple of players we're continuing conversations with, along with their agents. We'll continue to advance those conversations and see where they land," Bear said.

"Player movement is a thing of modern-day times. We want to secure as many of the best players as we can so we'd like to keep hold of all players developed in Auckland and give them every opportunity."
Several meetings have been held with players and coaches in recent weeks since the review was completed, with progress said to be positive.

"We've got a clear set of actions and we've talked that through with the players and we're committed to bringing those to life," Bear said.

Asked whether Ieremia, who has two years to run on his contract, had the backing of the players, Bear said: "Alama has got clear expectations around the need to remain relevant and evolve and improve. That's an ongoing piece and he's committed to making sure he's working hard to deliver around the areas we want to improve."

Ieremia and Tiatia declined to comment when approached by the Herald.

On Tuesday Tiatia posted on social media saying after three successful years it was the right time to move on.

"I'm excited and looking forward to spending more time with my family and optimistic on what opportunities arise moving forward," Tiatia said.

All Blacks typically play few, if any, games for their provincial teams in the modern age, unless working their way back from injury, as the domestic season clashes with test commitments.

Provincial unions are, however, fully reimbursed for their All Blacks' salaries. High-profile recruits are often used in sales pitches to attract members, and with duties in the community.

Signing Sotutu and Tuungafasi would, therefore, represent major coups for Counties and Northland, respectively.

Terrible. @Nogusta told us about some of this last year.

It must be pretty bad if the son of the Auckland Rugby president is thinking of leaving. Geez.

I made a prediction two years ago about Tanielu Telea going to Counties. Not too happy about that coming true. We just lost Tumua Manu, now our other centre option is gone.

Blues demoted their back office to the Auckland back office perhaps?

In years gone by I would have celebrated the fact that Auckland were imploding, but in recent times the new Blues have created a healthy relationship between the provinces, so I actually feel bad for them.

Wow, I actually had to pause and check myself after writing that. Still hate you buggers when it comes to on field rivalry though!

Kind of doesn’t matter how good a coach is if he forces away all your star players, and next rung below that.

Pretty much have to sack him and move on.

Crusaders have been best in the game at this; Blues are rising rapidly.

@dice the EOY team review was pretty scathing....players (and some management) were pretty unanimous in wanting AI and Tiatia gone. ARU sacked Tiatia but doesn't appear to have been enough to appease the players!
There is so much more to this story. I wouldn't be surprised if more comes out and AI 'resigns'
Sounds like he shouldve done the right thing by the union and left of his own accord. Hes clung on and now the players dont want to be near the place as long as hes still there

2018 was a year of so much hope - that overtime final win at EP was one the best rugby provincial rugby game I've been to, just amazing crowd, fairytale script and seemed to be the start of something special. Not to be it would appear!

Yeah, was at that game and it was a brilliant crowd, worst weather I’ve ever been in at a sporting event, and we were unstoppable on the comeback after being down by 19.

                                                    One of the best finals.

I was with my two kids, and I gave them the option to leave as well as we were completely soaked, but they loved it.

Even my wallet was completely drenched.

I took a selfie with them celebrating the win, I was so pumped I was fucking crosseyed.

@dice the EOY team review was pretty scathing....players (and some management) were pretty unanimous in wanting AI and Tiatia gone. ARU sacked Tiatia but doesn't appear to have been enough to appease the players!
There is so much to this story. I wouldn't be surprised if more comes out and AI 'resigns'
Sounds like he shouldve done the right thing by the union and left of his own accord. Hes clung on and now the players dont want to be near the place as long as hes still there

A classic 'lost the changing room'?

I'm really curious as to what happened. Not in a tabloid way, but because there is obviously a big pitfall here that he has waded into (much like Hammett) and probably something that everyone can learn from.
Is he a coach that only connects with a certain personality type? Is he a 'new' coach with ways of working that are different to what players are used to and they don't like it? Has he set boundaries that the players don't like?
Sounds like there was some problems with holding back player payments as well. That will always cause friction as players get torn between the team and family needs. Did the coaching issues get amplified because he didn't support the players in their battle for payment?

Turn up to training unprepared and just go off the cuff, lacking coaching IQ for that level. Dan Bowden pretty much looked after the backs & attack/strikes. I remember seeing the halftime shots of the Akl change room in the semi against Waikato. Akl behind on the scoreboard in the premiership final - and its Dan Bowden who has the whiteboard up and pumping up the backs - Ieremia standing behind him looking rather awkward and out of place lol. Some personal things happened too in which the players lost respect for him as a person.
