@nzzp yeah, spaceX and at the next level down rocketlab seem to be taking it seriously. The vanity project aspect is at least matched by the serious business

bezos and branson...seem more vanity project than anything

@kirwan I am flabbergasted at how quickly they are moving. It's truly insane.

This is worth a watch (more to come). It's very interesting what he says about design being a rounding error in the manufacturing process. Easy to design a rocket, hard to build the rocket factory essentially.

Also like his comments about the design process they use, great line about the problem with smart engineers optimising a process/part that doesn't need to exist. Had great examples for it too.

@nta I love that picture so much.

This thing fully stacked is so cool. Any news on when it’s getting fired up?

Nope - but they wouldn't be risking it unless they were ready to do something I guess.

    Yeah, he's going to lose.

As one of the commentators noted, it's an interesting strategy to point out how risky your opponents strategy is when you've not launched anything into orbit and your plan cost twice as much.

The GAO report was pretty comprehensive, and I doubt this will even get to trial. People are guessing this is an attempt to get a chunk of the next project (NASA have long term plans for the moon). Basically, he's taking his arsehole business practices to government contracts. He screwed over Microsoft recently with the same approach.

    He's a cockroach.

ok, I'll bite. Why do you consider them the same?

I see a big difference in ethics and goals/delivery between the two. Yes, Elon posts childishly on Twitter at times, sometimes painfully so. That makes him a dick (or insensitive to how he comes off due to Asbergers) not a cockroach.

The net good from Elon's companies seems pretty high.
