Does everyone here know who Barrie Cassidy is, BTW?
No idea. Who is he?
Yeah probably should have given that context.
Former Australian political journo - since the 70s. Worked on a few Federal campaigns (press secretary for Hawke's Labor govt in the 80s) and knows his way around the halls of power.
I'd say he knows more people on the ground in Ukraine right now than a few here - definitely more than me.
Critic of clickbait journalism, too. I thought that would line up nicely with a lot of people on here who decry the MSM
And I didn't take his tweet as saying nothing was happening - clearly Russia is being collectively dickheaded about this and has boots on the ground.. But the media are certainly on the hype train already.

I read Barries post as saying because Kiev isnโt a scene of death, destruction, bombs, explosions, flames that heโs not sure the country has actually been invaded.
OR it could just be that you're a grumpy old man who ilkes to get on his high horse about anything you choose to misread.
Ball, not man, Nick.
Iโm starting a discussion, nothing more, nothing less.

To be fair to @NTA, it has been hard to see what the actual extent of the invasion is.
Which was exactly my point.
Does everyone here know who Barrie Cassidy is, BTW?
Barrie Cassidy - no.
And agreed - I've only just started reading a few articles about what's going on, and I get the impression of... "fucked if I know".
The extent, etc... no idea.
But also... NZ Herald has headlines and captions that state "Russia has officially declared war on Ukraine" - which really surprised me. Then, I find... zero other references to any Official Declaration of War - other than Ukranians throwing it out there, in their desperate attempt to get the Cavalry sent in.
Instead, lots of mentions of a "Special Military Operation"... the tried and true method of carrying out a war but never actually declaring war - followed by both USA and USSR ever since 1945.But yeah... it certainly seems the Ukraine is getting gobbled up, poor bastards.

You lost me at press secretary for Bob Hawke in the 80's.
Perhaps (like many of us) a little long in the tooth now?
Not a fan of clickbait, but events, and the reporting thereof, does seem to move along a bit quicker now. -

@canefan I doubt Russia have designs bigger than the former Soviet states, unlike the Nazi's, but i suppose it's possible.
Nor do I. But former soviet states is extensive.

Right now I think we'll have Europe and the US trying to appear 'strong' whilst everyone knows that Russia is exerting their regional power and no-one is going to do shit to really help Ukraine.
In some ways you have to respect Putin. He knows the west is a hollow threat and he can always trade with China.

And India, and the Middle East, and Africa.
And South East Asia, and South America.
Plus the European powers will try to carve out sanctions that hurt them as little as possible.
