That proposal sucks. Any stadium that tries to be a jack of all trades (cricket and something) is invariably so compromised it does a shit job of anything not a rectangle.

@nzzp Then they should get on and upgrade Eden Park and while they are it look at improving the parking near the stadium and bus links to/from the CBD on big match days.

fair play - they only got their concert consent in the last few months. Until that happened they didn't have a viable long term stadium.

As for busses - I have found public transport to/from EP to be pretty good. More parkign is not what they need!

Public transport to/from EP is really good although I see it is no longer going to be free. The last thing needed is more cars to clog up the streets and make the journey worse for everyone. It's the old - Bus Lanes don't work they're empty. Doh that's the point Einstein Mike Hosking.

have to say, i hate the idea of play off being at a different stadium to the regular season, dont get me wrong i understand....but routine is a big thing for teams (and fans)....not like it makes a home game into an away one...but its not the same

Cricket needs it own place, or really clever design to not be shit for the more popular sports and events

Crap option IMO. it's not large like Hagley Park. it's surrounded by major arterials, which would make transport options difficult and it's the only largeish green space in the CBD

I favour @Duluth notion of Albany. Good links to busway - with the busway its 15 minutes from Vic Park. Close to 2 motorways Good stand already built. Should be possible to put in some grass embankments on the other three sides and build something very good for both test and limited over cricket.

Have you ever tried ot get from the bus station to the Stadium? I love it as a proper rectangular stadium - but access is not straightforward.

For Test cricket, I think Colin Maiden has potential. Close to a train station, it's a decent size. Could be a Basin V2.0 - with infrastructure already there

not tried to get from bus station. I based my assertion on @Kirwan saying it was easy as to get there during RWC 2011 having previously seemed to think Albany was somewhere north of Wellsford. I just mapped it and it's 1.17 km so 15 minute walk? So about the same as the walk from Twickenham Station to the ground.

Confused, the Albany dig directed at me? I grew up by Glenfield and later Whangarei, so kinda know where Albany (and Wellsford, mores the pity) is.

It would still leave about a rugby field sized green space outside any 'stadium' (for either continued use as club sport or whatever) if they developed Victoria Park into a test cricket ground.

Vic Park isn't just for sports though. It's for dog walkers and kids to run around on. picnickers etc. As such it's really the only site of its type in the CBD.

So why aren't you supporting the (not so) mighty Harbour?

Wasn't really intended as a dig. I remember you thinking Albany would be a ball ache to get to and later saying it was a breeze, so I used you as an ikon for the widely held view that getting to North Harbour Stadium is akin to early 20th century attempts to reach the South Pole

I don't see why it still wouldn't be. A football field's worth of leftover park, plus the treed fringe, is still an enormous amount of green space on the cbd fringe.

It would be a ballache for the two amateur codes clubs who use multiple playing fields on that Park on a Saturday. And would need to relocate a lot of their activities to other parks, if not the clubhouse altogether. But for the informal stuff like walking, running, boot camps, dogs, picnics etc, I'd see that being an easy coexistence.

Because I started supporting Auckland in 1984 before Harbour existing. Fucking splitters.

I got stuck in a car park after a game in Albany for an hour. It sucked. Eden Park is a breeze in comparison.

A soccer stadium at Western Springs would work.

I wonder if the first half of the NPC could be moved there too?

Pretty good summary of the two akl main stadium options with, unsurprisingly, major funding concerns and a lack of substance to Quay Park

    Stadium Unfeasibility - Greater Auckland

    Stadium Unfeasibility - Greater Auckland

Tomorrow Auckland’s Councillors will decide on the next steps in the city’s ongoing stadium debate, and it appears one option is technically feasible but isn’t financially feasible while the other one might be financially feasible but not be technically feasible. … Continued

Yeah I reckon it will go status quo, with slow incremental improvements. There's no money out there now unless we sell ourselves to the Saudis or something
