Is the follow on option still available?

Santner is having a great test.

I almost feel bad for rubbishing him in test cricket a few months ago.

Amazing from a guy who couldn't take test wickets until he balled out in India

If his batting stays good he could be considered an option in all conditions. It's good asset to have a guy who can bowl lots of overs and score a few runs.

I guess the counter argument is that we have Phillips and Ravindra who combined perform that role.

@Damo Santner also a good fielder and catcher. Whilst he is playing this well he must continue to play.

We can enforce follow on. Not sure what to do. I could go either way. Pitch likely to get better and probably not break up enough to worry about batting 4th.

ffs the only time England looked comfortable was when Southee was bowling. He also undermined the spells of Henry and ORourke when bowling in tandem with them. He really was a shocking selection when you see Santner come in and make England look all at sea. Geoff Boycott was right NZ should have picked Henry, O'Rourke, Santner, Patel and Phillips and prepared turning wickets and we might have won this series.

Early days but looking slightly ominous and familiar.

Henry getting some early, Southee bowling pies and Root and Bethel untroubled with Brook to come.

England will get 400 by the end of the day

Went to test today on your recommend. Waiting to see some classy England batting. Bloody hot here. But glad I am there

The Henry and Southee bowling average inversion has now occurred. And Henry now has a sub-30 career bowling average.

English fast bowlers must be feeling it in their legs after a long day yesterday and barely a break. I hope we can make the most of it this session.

    Excellent bowling.

I’m sure in Southees final test Stead will point out that his ‘pressure’ meant other guys got the wickets or some such bullshit.

If Smith was playing it might have been under 100

Traditionally the Black Caps have been very poor in turning conditions, but he's right this current lot are very effective. Latham and Young are very good on the sweep which makes it difficult for spinners, and Kane and Ravindra thrive on it. We've also got enough fire power and variation in Santner, Patel, Phillips and Ravindra alongside a good seamer or two to take 20 wickets easily enough.

Is it possible to prepare decks that really turn in NZ? I don't know much about it, I know the Indian spoil is quite different though.

With the way Young is playing in this test is that the final nail in the coffin for Conway?

He needs time away, and should not rush back. If Young continues to excel I wonder if Conway could be retooled into a WK batsman

Do you really need to send in a night watchman when you lead by 328?

That is the problem with Young. He gets in, does well, looks great but then can't go on.

He's probably a better bet than Conway right now but Young does need to score a big one at some point.

@Damo an opener scoring 42 and then 60 in his 2 digs is very good

I can't help but want to see him go on with it on a more regular basis
