What was wrong with Walsh' throw? I didn't see him go out of the circle.

I reckon has been called for brushing the ground just to the left of the block.

Tom Walsh fouls again, he's on the brink. The next throw has to be fair and good

Looks like the fouled throw 3, but throw 2 was reinstated to 20.38m good for 8th - probably still missed the final as the other qualifying group still to throw, and 12 total make it. Disaster for him.

Results now say they reinstated his 3rd, massive, throw so he's in as top qualifier. Lol

Looks like he's back as top qualifier.

Quite what was supposed to be wrong with that throw, I have no idea!

As a former thrower you often get some jobsworth official who thinks your foot brushed the ring when it didn't. Jacko Gill had this happen to him at a junior world champs back in the day I think.

I think the guy on the other side was making hand signals to indicate whether it was a fair throw or not. He was wrong twice.

IMO all the throws should be simple like the long/triple jump and javelin - just a line you have to stay behind.

Different circle sizes for hammer/shot vs discus, shot with a stop board, all unnecessarily complicated and prone to officials flagging stuff for minor nonsense.

@tewaio There's nothing complicated about a white circle with a stop board though. Those officials were making stuff up.

    Tom Walsh speaks.

"I'm not sure what the guy was calling me on. I thought my first throw was fair, but he ruled it a foul, though it was over the qualifying mark. Sometimes you get some that go for you and sometimes you get some that go against you. The second round throw I got a little bit tight and a little bit pushy and he called me for a foul again and I was like hold on, so i got that one overturned. Then that last one was much better and sailed over the qualifying mark. Then he called me on a foul again there and I was like what is going on here? It's good to get it done, it's not the way I would have liked it to be done, but there were two really good throws there and now I've got to get ready for [the final]."

Or, why not have a huge take-off area, with your jumo/throw measured from wherever you took off/threw from? We don't care where a high jumper takes off from, why do care where a jumper takes off from, or a thrower throws from?
Get back to measuring the jumping/throwing and not how good people are at measuring a run-up?

Before all you picks lay into me, this is a half-baked suggestion made after a bottle of wine (fuck you dry August)

The reason they don't do this is it only works at an elite level comp where there are a million cameras to accurately mark take off points. At local athletics/club level with 1 official and no cameras it wouldn't work. And having some artificial barrier between lower and upper levels of the sport in terms of performances, i.e. one has the added benefit of "take off where you like" isn't good for athletes progression.
