China
-
About time we started to distance ourselves from China - happy with that even if NZME, who have close "business" ties to China, aren't. The previous government got way too close to the Chinese Communist Party via their party donation/seats in parliament scheme which is why our allies viewed us as a weak link.
My old professor Robert Patman gives the best insight into the way China is trying to operate in the world: https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/382375/huawei-ad-hits-back-at-nz-govt-s-5g-decision
On a side note, if the CPC need someone to do their propaganda in NZ I can help. First tip: the fullback is never lifted in the line out

Unless you're in China then it's red like our comrades who fought the great fight to defeat our enemies under the guidance of Mao.

The strongest always bully. Or did I miss the whole western colonization period thing? Or the west fighting over the Middle East thing? Or the US arranging assassinations in Central America?

@Sneakdefreak with the levels of smog I don't think anyone can see the sky to contest that it isn't red!

If anybody's ever seen the Terracotta Warriors, and/or the Great Wall, and/or the Three Gorges Dam... China does NOT fuck around.

It's a fine line, how much shit do you want to take from China to keep their money. We already ignore their appalling human rights record, and expansionist trashing of tropical refs into polluted military bases. We've given police protection to an anti China writer, but not officially rebuked their govt. It seems we are drawing the line at having back doors in all our communications equipment, but are letting them hack the fuck out of the internet & social media ( hard to prove, Russia do it better anyway). But we are mainly cos UK, USA and Oz are doing it, I guess

@Machpants I suspect our role in 5 eyes is a big factor in our stance on Huawei. If we weren't so tight on that network I wonder if we'd listen to the warnings from the USA etc then sign up anyway.

That's a good point and I can tell you now that you'd be kicked for introducing an unacceptable risk into the network. At best you'd be partitioned which would negate the point.

Unacceptable risk ?

From stats.co.nz
"New Zealand’s two-way trade with China increased more than three-fold in the past decade, Stats NZ said today. It climbed from $8.6 billion in 2007 to $26.1 billion in the December 2017 calendar year."
So we just need to find $26.1b worth of customers outside of China. Doesn't sound too hard.........
