Forgive the pun, but I find Wellington's wind reputation to be overblown. I moved here a couple of years ago, and yes, it can be a bit - shall we say -breezy. But the truly blustery days - at least those that affect you when you live in/near the CBD - are probably a couple of handfuls a year.

Palmy is as windy (there's a reason the wind farms are there) just with none of the redeeming features of Wellington.

GT's! That is all I would take from Palmy and plant in Wellington.

@Stargazer Akl's climate sucks Never hot, often humid and rains too often.
Wellington from Parliament to Vic Tunnel is an awesome place. They've done a great job with a beautiful harbour and I have enjoyed more pleasant days there than truly awful ones, but ye Gods when it turns nasty it is unpleasant.
Was at the Basin for the last day of the Test against SA two years ago and the queue for coffee took 30 minutes but you could get a beer without any wait because the punters were desperate for any warmth.

Thank you to who ever moved this shit from the rugby thread! The fern should be about rugby, strippers, tinder dates, bleeding foreskins - not the weather in some shitty little town who's only claim to fame is being on the same island I was born.

TBH, GT's is one of those things that situationlly good, boozy weekend in Palmy, awesome - living in Palmy, only go there when friends are down for a boozy weekend.

I once had a seven piece fish burger from there and it still sits in my memory as being very satisfying.

Early forecast is for a balmy night so this one should be a cracker.
what exactly is the definition of a balmy night in Wellington?
Yep exactly how I pictured it. I have flown into Wellington on a few balmy days and the plane is going sideways as it comes in over the cook Strait and you can look out your back window and see directly down the runway
Or a turboprop with whose ground speed is actually negative while it ascends.
But then I've seen it like this too:
-
@antipodean haha Wellington airport should be mandatory pilot training I imagine if you can land a plane there you can land anywhere.
I actually love Wellington, have visited there many times, great night life, good Uni, my old man lived up on the Kapiti Coast which was pretty good. A city has to have something though that people can humourously take the piss out of and for Wellington yes it is the weather. I spent some time at my brothers place in Karori one Christmas and remember looking out of his front window and couldn't see the front fence because of the fog

Wellington is a horrible mix of cold windy weather, bogans, steep hills with massive earthquake risks, politicians, civil servants, hipsters and worst of all...people who say you cant beat Wellington on a good day.. blerg

@Canes4life said in Wellington weather etc:
I'd choose Wellington over any other city in a heart beat, not just because I'm from here but because other cities in NZ don't have much going for them to be fair. Auckland's a big city with no heart, Hamilton is New Zealand's Canberra and cities in the South are just so damn cold and bitter. Wellington has the best of everything IMO and the most entertaining rugby team. 😁
and thats just the women

You can't be talking about Dunedin? You just need a little

There's no bogans here, you're thinking of the Hutt and everyone knows that's not part of Wellington.

I was in Palmy last week for work, I swear I just about caught an STD by merely getting out of the car and breathing.......what a fucken hole.

yea, you can't just cut out the bits you don't like, otherwise you're not a city, just a small provincial town

A capital is just a shithole that other people stick polticians and civil servants so normal people dont have to deal with them on a regular basis. Otawa, Canberra... Wellington
