One of my staff flew over on the red eye to Melbourne this morning for a boys weekend at F1.
Expensive trip to watch it on tellyWell to avoid the virus spreading among crowds, spectators like him can now crowd into pubs to watch it...
Chatted to a couple Danish blokes last night who flew over for it, they were taking video of the pub saying its crazy how full this is compared to Denmark where everything is shut down. Considering European support of the F1 they probably should have canned this one a week ago, bound to be infection increases in Melbourne in the next few days.
-
Wales v Scotland is still on
Nothing to lose.
No cases = match played
Loads of cases = match played and two weeks off work.
If Carlsberg did rugby Tests...

Chinese wear them in the belief they stop getting germs.
that's literally the opposite of how it was explained to me in China last year, when i saw heaps of people wearing masks.
That would've been a Japanese tourist group unless they were yelling, pushing in front of orderly queues and spitting everywhere.

Really hope they look at doing games without crowds and just enough staff to televise and report, gotta keep the fans at home occupied/distracted with something positive.
There is a 'life must go on' element to all this too.
If you listen to the medical gurus, the best thing to do is to basically shut society down for a month. But can we really afford to do that? Do we want to?
There's a fundamental balance at the heart of humanity here. We are willing to risk death and injury to do fun things - drink alcohol, jump out of planes, play contact sports etc.
No doubt this disease is very serious but ordering us all to sit in our houses for a month fixes one problem but creates a whole lot more.

F1 cancelled.

Austria closing down as I type.
They came in the night...

we've sort of been prepping for this scenario. My biggest concern is if you grind everything to a halt for that long, how long does it take for the wheels to start turning again after? does 1 month of no business easily slip in to 2? Who can survive that?

oh god, Chinese New Year at our most Chinese-intensive park really is an eye opener for a lot of people.

Very few companies these days with thin margins and sizeable debt.
Meanwhile the ASX continues its decline. Down ~30% from peak.

@barbarian husband was watching a footy game earlier maybe man United v someone and the stadium was EMPTY. weirdest sight.
That's just a reflection of their ladder position.
It appears the F1 will continue this weekend, with no spectators. Hopefully most of the drivers remain to participate.
Everyone will be taking a wide berth around the Italian teams....

Can you clarify this post? Very few could survive or very few with thin margins and debt?

It's a really odd sort of vibe here in Sydney. The reality is we have around 78 confirmed cases of coronavirus in NSW. 34 of the patients had travelled overseas, 32 had contact with a sufferer and the other 12 are under investigation. Over 11,000 have tested negative.
So at the moment it's a very isolated outbreak considering Sydney is a city of 4 million.
But watching the US, Italy, Europe... there is definitely a feeling that something is around the corner.
I'm getting married in two weeks, and the ceremony is out of Sydney. We're a bit worried about either ourselves or our guests either getting the virus, or coming into contact with someone who has. A 14 day quarantine would be disastrous!
But I have mates who are getting married in about six weeks, and I would be far more concerned if I were them. We should be OK to have everything run as planned. But it's all changing so quickly I don't know where things will be in six weeks.
Judging from the US, I'd suggest we may well see the NRL, AFL and Super Rugby go on hiatus. What the fk are we going to do for the next three months? Read? May God have mercy on our souls.
Getting married in 2 weeks?
You have our deepest sympathies

Take my advice, get freaky as often as possible now, because Autumn is coming, then Winter when the first kids pop out

One of my patients was busy today monitoring NZ utilities stocks with strong dividends (I think he said GNE dividend % was close to 6%?) with a view to buy. Some will look at this whole thing as a golden once in a decade opportunity

Isn't the point of slowing it down to give the medical system a chance to respond, and therefore save more lives? I think it's a tradeoff though - economic slowdowns have real impacts on mortality; in some ways getting through this and moving on is critical.
I'm not a disease expert, but the ones I have read seem to say this doesn't mutate like the flu - so once you're immune, you're immune. So get it, then get crusiing

Working from home today (have a bit of a cold ... well at least I hope that's all it is) and there's seagulls going crazy all over my balcony. I've never seen a seagull on my balcony. It's the end of days.
Also on the people going crazy thing, the supermarkets in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney were as hammered as any of the "Asian" suburbs. Tip for Aussies out there, Mitre 10's have toilet paper in stock if you get desperate.

My two cents worth on the panic buying. I'm going to assume a lot of the initial "panic buyers" that are being mentioned on these boards are recent immigrants from mainland China. They will be communicating mainly in Chinese still, will get most of their information from the internet in Chinese based in China, will have strong communications with family and friends back "home", and will be somewhat isolated from the general society in which they live (Auckland/Sydney). In other words, rightly or wrongly they would have been living the "horror" of the situation in China. Really confusing for the average laid back Kiwi seeing all these shocked looking people buying lots of shit they didn't need.
Saying "Oi, recent immigrants from China, just calm the f%#k down" is probably not a problem. The trouble is the idiotic natural tendency of people to say "Oi, Asians, just calm the f%#k down".
During the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake here in Japan, the foreign community behaved similarly. Being cut off linguistically and somewhat isolated from the general society, a lot panicked and went full retard. One guy left his wife and small kids here in Japan and ran back to Germany!
