Or maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age.
No you're not. Your position is logical.
Maybe having come from countries where COVID is much more widespread than it ever was here these few fuckwits simply don't get it.
Certainly they have no concept of acting in the greater good or gratitude for being in a C-19 free country.

@Kiwiwomble I think the success of our lockdown was the majority of people just got on and did what was required in the hope that we would come out of it sooner and better for it...although, we know in our lockdown, there were people that flouted the rules, but it wasnt such a big deal as Covid hadnt taken hold in our communities, now, we have people coming form places where it is rife, risking our whole countires wellbenign & economy because they cant stay in thier room for 14 days, cant go without a chocolate bar or whatever he got at the supermarket.
I think for the most part, people will do what is asked, but as always, a small number (2 we know of in the past week) have broken the rules, maybe there needs to be stricter controls on them, because of the fluffybunnies that cant behave.

that's fair, im probably a bit jaded being in Melbourne and seeing how its spreading
although, a small counter point, they changed the meaning of "literally" to include "figuratively"...which is Literally and antonym...so i still kind of think people are the worst

“Around 6.50pm the man escaped through a fenced area at the Stamford Plaza when he was out smoking, as a section of external fencing was being replaced,” head of managed isolation and quarantine Air Commodore Darryn Webb said.
See, they really need to make an example of someone ($2500 fine and 14 days in a jail cell would be a good deterrant) to show people that this will not be tolerated.
-
@taniwharugby absolutely - its muppets like this that fuck it up for all those folk doing their Q-time without being dicks about it. I'm on the fence (boom tish) about whether I'm expecting hard-ass security onsite but people like this make me think we should taser first and apologise second!
-
So the authorities are replacing existing fences at all managed isolation facilities with higher, 6 feet-high fences and this selfish bastard climbs a fence exactly at a section where the replacement work is taking place. This is a deliberate act of exposing the community to the risk of infection - even if he didn't know yet that he was infected. I don't think this is a govt stuff-up. Unless they're going to lock these people up in prisons, they can't foresee every possible instance of people trying to escape the isolation facilities. Some level of trust must be possible. This idiot has breached that trust. I hope he gets the highest possible punishment, whatever that may be.

yeah if people are gonna try to get out, I expect they will find a way, which is why I think they need to make an example of these 2 people to act as a deterrent for further escape attempts.

countires wellbenign
This absolutely should be a word!

@kirwan I think yuo're right, but let's see. From a couple of hours ago, my first reaction:
@nzzp said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
Prediction: no accountability for anyone in this system either. It'll be a 'sorry, we'll try better next time'. Unbelievable.
-
@Siam we were not in L4 lockdown then, so isnt comparable IMO, these people are in managed isolation, so different.
I agree in part with @Kirwan but I also think stopping some of those determined to get out, means we are for all intents and purposes locking them in thier rooms, which if it needs to go that way, then fine, but I think making an example of these 2 idiots would go a very long way to ensure others are not as quick to try to escape.

@taniwharugby send them back from whence they came. We need to draw a line

We can't do that though right. A kiwi comes home from working in the UK and commits murder on Day 3 doesn't get sent back to the Midlands. We have to prosecute citizens under our law.
If suggest we go waaaay harder than a $2.5k fine. This is a willing act of law breaking that knowingly puts our entire population and economy at risk. I'd suggest 30 days detention and at least $10k fine.

You're on the right track. Add in 20 lashes and 30 days hard labour

Oooh, lashes, I like that. What about giving up your 1st born, or for the unmarried, invoking jus primae noctis (yes, I had to google for the phrase)
