Any opinions about the marriage plesbesite or we need a Republic (take 12,868)?
I think the marriage thing will have a much better chance of passing if people like Karl Stefonvich and the rest of them just shut the fuck up. It doesn't have to be a war.
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel I genuinely don't understand why if you want same sex marriage, you campaign so hard against the only option available to you for the next few years.
It suggests to me they care less about securing that right and more about hating on the government.

A postal plebiscite is fucking stupid.
Both parties playing politics on it is fucking stupid. It's rich as fuck for ALP to get on their high horse when they did nothing about it either.
The main reason for not becoming a republic is the very thought of Bill Shorten as the head of state. He'll make a bad enough PM.
What do these fluffybunnies actually do for their money?

Particularly when Shorten supported a plebiscite...

I really intensely dislike Bill Shorten. And he has the charisma of a wet flannel. Fuck that guy.
On the other side, Turnbull is hopeless, and could get rolled before the end of the year. The Liberals appear completely divided, and thus can't achieve a fucking thing. Prime Minister Peter Dutton anyone? God help us.
The Venezuelan Government supporting Unions will be back in charge at the next election. Awesome.

Unfortunately that is an extremely accurate description of the state of politics in Aus. Interesting enough it's almost 10 years since Rudd was elected. You can chart a downward spiral pretty much from that point on.

The plebicite will be a debacle, and the debate on both sides will be putrid. I am firmly in the pro-gay marriage column, but the hypocrisy on both sides is unbearable.
Eg the left worry about the debate being too vicious, too ugly and harmful to young people, gays etc. Which is fair enough. But the first time a raving right-wing bigoted moron says something stupid (that should just be ignored) the left amplify it to 1000 and say 'this is what we're fighting against'.
And anyone on the anti-GM is branded as a 'homophobic c@nt', shamed on social media etc.
Painting one side as the only/right way to vote and the other side as morons/rednecks/bigots is part of why the left have lost a series of major battles over the last five years. And I don't think it will happen here (because GM is inevitable), but if they play their cards this way then the chances of a 'no' vote increase IMO.

That's exactly what I've been saying. A hearts and minds approach will win the vote not screaming and insulting the other side. I get some people might feel strongly about this issue but it should be remembered that only a few years ago all the major parties (including one Penny Wong) were opposed to it. Slandering people who they agreed with until very recently isn't a smart move.
Personally I think that if gay people want to call their unions marriages then go ahead. I'm just a bit surprised that the word is of such vital importance. The true human rights violation would be if gay people could not enter into legally recognised partnerships. That is thankfully no longer the case.

And so the citizenship train rolls on, collecting victims in its grill...
New Zealand's Prime Minister has confirmed that "unwittingly or not", Barnaby Joyce is a citizen of the country because his father was born there.
The Deputy Prime Minister [of Australia] revealed this morning that he was contacted by the New Zealand High Commission last Thursday and advised he "could be a citizen of New Zealand by descent".
Prime Minister Bill English said he was informed about Mr Joyce's case late last week and according to local law, he is a New Zealand citizen.
...
Oh boy...
Anyway at least the satire sites are getting something from it:
Barnaby Joyce Spotted Drinking Tui Long Necks Out Of A Wooden Crate In Logan Pub

The question marks around Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s citizenship are beginning to swirl rapidly after photos have emerged of the former Tamworth accountant drinking long necks of New Zealand lager in a Far-South Brisbane bikie pub.
Witnesses say Barnaby was seen ordering a “bux of flaggins for his bros” before saying saying “churr” and asking the bartender how the Crusaders were looking this year.
Dominic Kingi, venue manager of the Silver Fern Tavern in Logan City, says that the Deputy Prime Minister often makes a point of visiting his establishment when coming into Brisbane.
“He usually comes through here on his way in from the bush, bro” said the manager in a thick south Auckland accent.
“I think he likes to lie low in the 4114 to get a break from politics and get a taste of back home. It’s hard being a Kiwi in this country. Sometimes you need to be around your own people”
“He used to come in here with that Greens Senator, Scott Ludlam, or whatever his name is. They wouldn’t even talk politics. Mainly just talk about the All Blacks before going out in to the car park for a few dots”
These revelations comes after Barnaby Joyce has today admitted that he has referred himself to the High Court following questions from Fairfax Media about whether the Deputy Prime Minister could be a dual citizen of New Zealand and ineligible for Parliament.
In shock developments at Parliament House on Monday, Mr Joyce became the latest victim of a worsening citizenship saga after extensive investigations revealed he inherited dual citizenship through his father, who was born in New Zealand.
Mr Joyce is yet to clarify whether or not he supports the All Blacks or The Wallabies, but his friends in South West Queensland say that they now have a lot of answers when it comes to his treatment of the sheep while working as a shearer in the late eighties.

“It All Makes Sense” Says Traumatised Tamworth Merino
CLANCY OVERELL | Editor | CONTACT
A traumatized Tamworth merino whether has finally been able to reconcile with years of mistreatment at the hands of a certain agricultural worker in the region.
The three-year-old is ruminant mammal has spent his life living between the Liverpool Plains and Walcha but predominantly in the Tamworth area.
He says the recent news about sheep shagging in the New England electorate has really answered a lot of questions for him, and several of his friends.
“It’s just. I could never understand” says the victim, John* (name changed).
“I just could never understand [the attacker’s] interest in me”
“But now, after the news. It all makes sense”
“He was a Kiwi hiding in plain sight”
After today’s news, prominent sheep activists have called for a Royal Commission into Agricultural Responses to Sheep Abuse At The Hands Of New Zealanders – citing that the issue is something that has literally gone straight to the top.
These calls comes after photos have emerged of the former Tamworth accountant drinking long necks of New Zealand lager in a Far-South Brisbane bikie pub.
Witnesses say Barnaby was seen ordering a “bux of flaggins for his bros” before saying saying “churr” and asking the bartender how the Crusaders were looking this year.

It's amazing how desperate and idiotic leftists can be about this issue. There's a vast difference between being born in a country and having citizenship conferred on you by descent without your application.
-
@antipodean Agreed - its a bit weird to get all shouty about it BUT the rules are rules, as everyone was rushing to point out when the Greens fucked up.
-
This has to be bullshit. Yes he is eligible to apply for NZ citizenship by descent but surely he doesn't automatically become one because his dad was born there. If true that is utterly fucking retarded.

Like most things, citizenship is governed by the law at time of birth, and the NZ law of the era automatically granted citizenship to children whose fathers were NZ citizens (current law requires the child to apply for it). Barnaby Joyce's father was born in NZ, so was a citizen by birth, and consequently handed it down to his children.

I expect the High Court to rule in favour of those who receive citizenship by descent. Particularly given the wording of s41(i):
acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power -

Just what I was saying back then.
There was plenty of comment that people must be stupid not to know they held citizenship or didn't ask and find out.
The stupidity lies in a badly worded rule that does not allow for various requirements (or lack thereof) from other countries and at it's strictest reading probably excludes everyone.
I get the point of the rule. It's obviously Australia's business if they want to be xenophobic and assume all non-Australian onlys are 'un-Australian'. It needs to be prescribed a bit better though if they want to apply it.
