The Scotland zig zag one is my favourite, made better by the fact I was watching it from under the posts.
Poor old Scots.
I remember watching that at the age of 19 with the old man. This was at the height of my "I hope Scotland are at least respectable in defeat" phase. Apparently we had the same dumbfounded expression when seven guys in a row decided to fall off him.
Shit those other tries were amazing too. What an athlete he was. What a back three the ABs had.
Due to pissing down in the second test I remember they managed to keep him tryless so that was a moral victory haha.
I think the loosies scored all the tries in that match. It would have been easy to look up before NZR took over the stats.allblacks page and ruined it.
That was a great year of live rugby watching for me, I went to every AB home test. Assume it would be too expensive for uni students to go to every AB home match these days.
Yeah I went to the Athletic Park test vs the Wallabies. Outstanding fun in the pouring rain ( which turned brown from all the rust in the stands )
At that match I nearly got in a punch up with two old codgers sitting behind us who kept hitting us with their umbrellas. They were just being boomer dicks.
That was another cracker match to be at too. That was the match where I saw how much talking/controlling things that Zinny did.
That match in the rain in Wellington in 96 is legendary.
My favourite plays have to be the way that twice Lomu slides to grab a ball on the deck in the slippery wet conditions and cleanly gathers. For a man of his size it was such an impressive feat.

One thing about Jonah is that due to his size people overlooked his skills IMHO. The first of the slides (which leads to Justin Marshalls try) I'd say he has a 40% chance of beating the Wallaby (Tune?) to the ball. That he wins the footrace then collects the ball and offloads it is seriously impressive skill on a rainy day with a slippery ball.
Yep, and I know that it was the amateur days so there may not have been quite as many gym junkies as today but his results in the tests ( excluding the dreaded 3km run ) were off the charts. He did work hard at it but his god given leg up gave him a ridiculous advantage.
As you say the way he moved for such a huge dude was out of this world.
Ben Tune ( much more mortal in comparison ) always gave him a serious run for his money, some hard tackles and nice sidesteps in there !

His balance was arguably his greatest strength and point of difference. There are big fast guys, but they usually go down easily. Jonah was ridiculous - just got hit and stayed vertical - amazing to watch.

Yep but his power was unmatched too. He could trample guys with his leg drive or if they went high he could ‘hand them off like flies’ ( copyright Bill McLaren )
In any other era Christian Cullen would be the freak athlete of any backline……not in those days

Very interesting. Looking at the back row I always feel it's a shame that (probably in part due to his successor) that Josh Kronfeld is so often forgotten when it comes to looking at great loose forwards.
Not saying (of course) that he would merit selection over RM just I feel like he is something of a forgotten man and doesn't even enter into conversations. Ofc Mccaw-Jones-ZB is the best loose forwards trio.

@nonpartizan I think Kronfeld, like Jones before him and McCaw after him were atop the tree kinda redefined the role of a 7.
That was a pretty long period where we almost always had the best 7 in the game.

Absolutely. It's such a neat bookend that Jones started his career in 87 and a world cup win Richie ended his in 15 with a world cup win and their combined careers with Josh being the overlap from 95-01 account for the best part of three decades.
Cardio wise I thought Kronfeld was super human.... In that really good period from 95-97 on any highlights video he seems to be never more than a couple of yards away from the ball.

There's a couple more out there, I think there's on called Blood, Sweet and Touring which is a French tour, and theres a 1991 one. Also a good one if you can find it is tv programme of the 1992 tour to South Africa which goes on tour but then also has old ABs in NZ discussing the rivalry with the Saffas.
I'll have a search for the others after work today.

Thanks, just finished watching it. These are absolutely superb documentaries. It funny how Michael Jones loves to play his guitar, Bryan Williams said he loved to take his on tour too. So much good behind the scenes footage, it's the little things, when JK is coaching Zinzan how to play the sax and ZB gets it right and says "that's the bugger!".
I will watch that South Africa one when I get in from work tomorrow.

Thank you Nepia, I still have not had a chance to watch this but shall this week.
I actually fell down a rabbit hole and watched this interview of Wayne Shelford then began checking out some of the other interviews on this channel, including one on Michael Jones but also non rugby ones. The presenter seems very knowledgeable rugby fan and poses very thoughtful questions.
I really enjoy listening to Buck, I find him likeable and a pretty good storyteller. It is clear that he brought good leadership to the All Blacks based on what his father taught him and the regimen he was accustomed to in the NZ Navy. I'm not sure if kiwis would consider him a national treasure but he comes across to me as a straight talking no nonsense guy. Seems like inter provincial politics saw him get kicked out of the All Blacks.

That is cool. All being well I will be in Rotorua in July so I would love to check that out.
