I think the suspicion lies in the quoting.
I always thought it meant existing or occurring in the same period of time. Say like 1967/early 68.

But that’s two different questions really. A band can be ok but it’s still ok to hate them maybe because you don’t like the genre or the singer or whatever. Saying a band is the best ever is only ever going to be a matter of opinion. Having said that, if enough people are saying that, then maybe that band is at least in the conversation.

This is getting way OT, but as composers and importance to music, the Beatles are regarded as hugely influential and why their music is studied seriously. Apart from the quality of their music, they are credited with bridging the split between Classical, Jazz, Avant Garde etc, and "serious" composers like Philip Glass, Bernstein, John Taverner, Steve Reich, John Adams, etc have all quoted their work as a major influence. No need to mention their influence on rock music...
Nickelback may be a great band and better performers, but the Beatles wrote the rules, developed the production techniques and pretty much created the musical environment they exist in.
