Was out for dinner with a trainer last night as they had an unexpected win (Paying $76!!!)

Anyway we were talking about a horse that looks a bit hopeless and someone said, "nah it's doing ok down the South Island" and the trainers reponse was "exactly, it's running round down Pig Island"

How come pig island for either of the isalnds? It seems a rubbish/lazy reference or is there some background to it?

Could be wrong, but I think it's a reference to Captain Cook releasing pigs at Cape Kidnappers on one of his visits here.

So I guess that's the north Island.

I've never heard that story before but after doing some reading it appears that pigs were delivered twice in the South Island before being dropped off to my ancestors at Cape Kidnappers.

So I guess that's the South Island.

Pig Islanders is a favorite of @Canerbry when describing North Islanders....hopefully he hasn't been wrong all this time, or maybe he was just being derogatory rather than caring about the historical reference 😉

Google suggests that it was originally a term for all NZers dreamed up by the convicts but that Sth I slanders adopted it to describe their northern counterparts because of a deep seated inferiority complex and self projection

Alternatively its because Sth Islanders allege those north of Cook Strait are sub-human

@Hooroo weird ,apart from Canerbry I've never heard anyone else ever use the term and I just put it down to the effects of a genepool so lacking in diversity its probably only matched in nature by the Chatham island black robin .

Anyway when I was living in Australia someone from down that way got quite worked up when we were chatting , he was ranting how fucked we'd be without the south island generating all our power. I guess that makes them feel relevant in some way looking at it like that.

In chatting, you were probably being a bit of a Pig Island cock. Many people need to watch that.

It was a term I first heard at CBHS about 4th form, at the time it seemed to suit. Recently on the Fern some special snowflake Pig Islanders got a bit precious about it so now it works precisely as intended.

Hmmm speaking for myself pig island has never wound me up at all , my first thought when I hear the term is of an albino hotel porter with prodigious banjo playing talents.
    No idea why.

Wow! I have never heard a north Islander say that until Wednesday and now I heard it again last night from another horse trainer

    Bizarre.

Maybe it has something to do with those in horse industry up here?

I always thought it originated from a geographical ignorance inbred into Cantabrians that confused Auckland with the Auckland Islands
