Been hearing ad's on radio for Moa Beer, but can't find it in local bottlestores or supermarkets.

Was tempted to by a Manuka beer tonight but Maka or some close name, but 4 bottles for $14.99 was a tad to much.
Mata it is....made in Kawerau, they had a Feijoa beer that I tried, very perfumed, a tad dry for me, the manuka one is nice though

You'll probably find Moa beer a tad too much as well, up here they sell from about $6-7.50 per 500ml bottle, I have seen them in Auckland New World for $5.50-7.00 per bottle -
I got a bottle of the Epic Portomarillo, I really liked it. It took a little getting used to at first, but grew on me. It was a collaboration with Dogfishhead Brewery (from the US). A tamarilo flavoured porter.

Epic have also done another batch of Stout, which has been barrel aged. Its a very nice drop.

Was in Thorndon New World again the other day, their beer selection has grown again. Very impressive. There were a bunch of American beers I haven't seen in nz before... Samuel Adams, Rolling Rock, Brooklyn Lager and Dos Equis. There was also a load of other international and local beers too.
I really can't stand beers like Samuel Adams and Rolling Rock - when I was in New England my US mates loved them, I struggled to drink a bottle without throwing up. -
I shelled out $6 or something for the Rolling Rock. It wasn't worth it. It was insipid and dull. Clearly a month in America had ruined my tastebuds when it came to beer while I was over there. -
that's odd. I've seen Moa in quite a few supermarkets here. Even Pak'n'Save I think (it has a really shit beer selection, here at least). Have you tried Liqourland? They are usually very good.
Limited outlets here Allstar, went for a look in major supermarkets and only have Super liqour and Mills. -

Thats the one TR, will splash out and give it a go. -
New release from 8 Wired - Tall Poppy Red India Ale. Very tasty food beer. A hoppy Pale Ale with a lightly roasted malt to give it some depth of flavour and richness. Imagine Monteiths Celtic Red with heaps of hops, much more body and an Alc content of 7%.

three boys Wheat - their version of a Hoegaarden type beer and very refreshing -
I got some German brewed Becks from One Day Cellar the other week. It tastes quite different than the usual Becks that is brewed here under license. The main thing that sprung to mind is the NZ one tastes sweeter. Not sure whether it's just the difference in water, or something more complicated
-
tried Kirin the other night, pretty average TBH

Also tried a Hawkes Bay Cider (in a 330ml bottle shaped like a Champagne one) whic was pretty good, and getting a taste for some of these ciders about at present!

Allstar - you find that with most of the ones imported or brewed under licence, they appear to be brewed more with the local taste or style in mind. I hated the English brewed Stella, but didnt mind the Imported version (hate the NZ version too) Grolsch is another I have found differs hugely too. -
Had a doz of Yeastie Boys 'Rapture' delivered yesterday. Order from Beerstore (or special bars) only and not in shops. Had been wanting to try it and saw they were donating sales proceeds of this on the weekend to CHCH so that made up my mind.

Nice brew, not 'in your face' but still interesting.
Rapture is the second of two beers, released in early 2011 that showcase the differences of a single ingredient. Like the Nerdherder and Monster series did with hops, these beers illuminate the difference that yeast makes in a low strength sessionable summer ale ("Rapture" emplys the fruitier notes of a Belgian abbey yeast, while "Europa" uses a clean German ale yeast).

Rapture: Pale and wheat malts, Nelson Sauvin and NZ Cascade hops, Belgian abbey yeast.
Europa: Pale and wheat malts, Nelson Sauvin and NZ Cascade hops, German ale yeast.
if anyone is keen to splash out on a bottle of Moa Mikkeler (approx $36 a bottle) apparently available at Hasigo Zake in wellington...let us know if it reaLLY WORTH the coin...
Just back from a Stag Do in Brussels. The best man is a brewer and he organised a brewery tour of the last Lambic brewer in Brussels http://www.cantillon.be/

Very interesting tour and then we got to taste the beer. Tried the Geuze, Kriek, Faro and the Lambic........My honest opinion, all of them were not my taste, all very sharp and acidic in taste. If I am generous these would be for connoisseurs only! We did go to a nice little beer bar http://www.alabecasse.com/en/info.html that had a great selection of beers, that were more to my taste. Especially Kwak -
Tried the Yeasties Boys new drop that is getting a lot of press lately. 'Rex Attitude' is the name and the reason it's getting attention is that it's the world's first brew to use 100% Peat Smoked Malt (the malt used in making Whisky such as Lagavulin and Laphroig). They were advised that using more than 5% would make their beer undrinkable so they went ahead and broke the rule.

The result is a golden ale that, when raised to the nose makes you think you are about to sip on an Islay Single Malt. Quite an interesting experience and sensory trick.

I would recommend trying it but warn that it's not for the faint hearted. Unless you enjoy the iodine, creosote, peaty smoky notes of an Islay Malt don't even go near it.

If you get the chance to try it from the keg, that is best. I tried fresh and bottled on the weekend and din't really enjoy the bottled. Once the initial nose had gone only the medicinal flavours were left which made it almost unpleasant. Fresh seemed to stay fresh and smoky tasting throughout the pint. -
I got a 4 pack of Montheiths Single Source Lager yesterday.

I was nice, clean and quite tasty. But i'm not sure I'd pay $30/dozen for it though.
I actually thought it was a bit weak... -

Yeah well whoever advised them was right on the button if you ask me. I tried some at the beer appreciation society that I attend ( Basically half a dozen or so of us who get together every few weeks with the weirdest beers we can find ) and can reliably inform whoever is interested that it tastes like someone put dogshit in a used ashtray, added water, put it in a bottle and shook it up. One of my fellow attendees is a staunch whiskey drinker from Glasgow and in that unmistakable accent said "Don't poot any of that shite near me!"

Everyone has different tastes and Crucial apologies if it sounds like I'm insulting you personally but by golly, AWFUL stuff.

I'm keen to see other peoples feedback on it. -
As I said, I didn't find the bottled stuff very pleasant at all, but on draught it was a different story. No offence taken at all,I can see why for some it would be hard to get past the nose.

Certainly isn't a session beer.

Yeastie Boys like to push the boundaries and go a bit different. Generally they have the skill to make something good from a wild idea. They are famous for their PKB which is a dark yet heavily hopped beer. -
I'm not a fan of the Islay style whiskys, so I think I'll steer clear...
-
I actually thought it was a bit weak...
yeah, it is still a 'batch brew' rather than a 'micro brew', so was judged as such. I had another tonight, and I thought it was better. Not sure if that was tempered by the face i'd just had a good session at the gym.

As a slight aside, if any of you guys have Sky, you should check out a replay of this weeks Brew Masters. It has Sam Sam Calagione doing his colobartion beer with Luke Nicolas from Epic when Sam was down here last year for Beervana. The whole series is actually pretty good from what i've seen. -

Tried some of that Dogfish stuff at Beervana. Quite good IIRC. Must set the MySky for that series as I forget it's on. On saw last weeks one.
