We'd just need to to nationalise the AB's, seize the assets of any player that signs overseas, imprison players that refused to play for the mandated wage.. oh and Winston would be the convener of selectors and would always wear a ceremonial AB's uniform

Crazy idea. Taxpayers would have to pay for the free-to-air broadcast rights, Sky would lose both income from these games and from the subscribers it will no doubt lose. That would probably mean that the remaining subscribers would have to pay more for what is still left in their sports package (incl all non-finals of competitions such as Super Rugby & Mitre 10 Cup & non-domestic test matches).
Now, I think that the current way sports can be viewed by the public on tv and internet should change because Sky's model is completely outdated, but this just seems a stupid way of doing it. Sky should definitely get some competition, viewers should not have to pay for what they don't want (like the basic package) but the same applies to the general public/taxpayer. Some games should be more accessible and I have no answer for how it should be done, but this doesn't seem to be the way.

I think the whole "taxpayers have to pay?!" angle is completely overblown but since when have TV3 and Prime been funded by taxpayers money?
My bet is Sky will win any bidding war anyway, because they've got Prime and they can just put it on both that and Sky Sports. Hell, I wouldn't put it past them to then make the Prime broadcast so shit people feel forced to pay for Sky. Maybe try and slip an ad break in every stoppage.

all the AB games in the 2011 RWC were FTA, and while I had sky I watched one of the FTA offerings, 1 - cos it was FTA in HD (on both TV1 & TV3) and 2 - they had better comms, may have been TV1 that had Merhts.

@Unco I was thinking in terms of NZ on Air possibly being responsible for the free to air broadcast of these games. As far as I know, NZ on Air is a crown entity that is - I think - funded through the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, so with tax payers money. But yeah, it all depends on how the Bill is worded and implemented. I'm not really sure what will happen - for example - if none of the Free to Air Channels wants to spend the money on broadcasting these games because it's to expensive.

The ratings of All Blacks tests on FTA would rinse the numbers on SKY. Both NZR and the FTA network would leverage the shit out of those numbers to commercialise the product. The same applies for all sports being suggested as part of this bill.
People who think money will suddenly disappear from sport because the viewer doesn't have to open their wallet don't understand the economics of commercial television.
There's a reason SKY don't release the numbers watching through MYSKY decoders. They don't want advertisers to know the piddly numbers they pull compared to cooking and makeover shows on the free to air networks.

But 60 staff all seem from chatter to watch AB Tests on Sky.
I totally get My Bachelor Voice Makeover Cooking Apprentice Celebrity Survivor rates all over the rugby but why would that change if they went to FTV?
Especially if they had Quinny commentating - oh oh oh

Too late. The NZ FTA networks are now contentless basket cases.
It's a shame, as I really like Aussie model they have, and the 2 major codes over there get huge deals with their FTA and satellite splits.
But the NZ broadcasters are now has beens. I would worry about the overall financial health of NZRU.
But I also think NZRU have missed out the last 20 years with really poor delayed and way more add-filled than Aussie equivalent FTA exposure.
Just look at s rugby crowd next time your at a stadium, it's pretty old.
The all blacks are big enough to survive behind the paywall, but provincial/super rugby needs some more good quality FTA coverage.
