It does prove that Maxwell is still a bit of a shunt, tho.

Smith gone, and 63/4. An innings defeat looms.

Aussies still need to bat about another 25 overs but they should be home now.

This has been another pretty good test. And it's still in the balance.

Marsh and Handscomb have both stepped up at the right time. Batted really well. Still a session to go and our tail has been very weak so India still have a real chance.

But the runs are the key. If we can sneak a lead of 30-40 then time becomes a massive factor.

This is a bloody great series. Best since the 2005 Ashes I reckon. Another amazing finish, so much ticker from Marsh and Handscomb in the face of enormous pressure.

I don't buy its a great series, I mean the 2 first innings here were ground out 1,200 runs. 1st test India barely made 100 each inings, 2nd test Aussie barely make 100 in the 4th. Thats not great series cricket.

The Aussie-India series are usually classics, this would be one of the worst in the last 5 or 6

Let's see what kind of pitch India produce for the last test - they need to win to take the trophy. Minefield? Dustbowl? Flat deck?

They took the points here, and will be hoping Kohli fires. But maybe Warner could finally get up as well.

@gollum Is that a serious post?

So in this test there were too many runs, but in the first two there weren't enough?

I'm normally pretty tolerant of other opinions but seriously that is ridiculous. We've had three very different matches and now have a series decider.

Exactly, a great series is not over as a contest by day 3 of every test. We've had 3 tests, 2 of which were flat out over by the end of day 3 as a contest & with 3 innings below 130 & another below 200. For me a great series is you go into the last day withy any of the 3 results open, ideally 400 v 400, 300 v 250. Not 600 v 450 or 100 v 250.

You end up with the sort of utter dross we saw when SA tried to bat out 3 days in India earlier in the season

How is that hard to get? You actually thought this was a great test? Pujara breaking the record for most balls faced? Contrast this with the India v Aussie 2014/15 series, the 2001 series, the 2008 tour - or this -

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-australia-2010/engine/match/464526.htm

Thats a great test. These sides have produced some great cricket over the last 20 years, this aint it

Gripping and/or absorbing, if we have to argue great.

Thought it was the classic game of cricket where a draw stands out as a great result (for Australia) to the cricketing 'purist', while others lament there being no winner or loser after five days 🙂

Well done by Marsh and Handscomb, first time a team has survived to bat out a draw when conceding a first innings lead since 2011 apparently. I thought they were toast... it was probably that middle session on Day 5 and the first hour of the final session that added some much needed tension.

For Pujara to bat that long after a long stint of the field was a thoroughly impressive display of concentration and application. O'Keefe must feel like a bowling machine...

@gollum I think that's a pretty narrow definition of a 'great test'. The beauty of test cricket, for mine, is the wildly different ways each game can unfold.

IMO you can have great tests that are over in three days. You can have great draws too.

And it's about more than the scorecard. It's the ebb and flow, the heroes and villains, all the sub-plots and story lines.

I don't necessarily think this match was a great test, but it was a very good one. On the back of two other gripping games. With a whole bunch of stuff going on behind the scenes. In India, where it was assumed we'd be steamrolled.

I've been glued to every ball.

I think this has been a cracking series. Tense cricket, India dominated by Aus in Test 1, and then clawing their way back from a tough position in test 2. This test was engrossing - looked to be a filthy turner, but obstinate batting from both sides led to a fascinating result.

add me to the enthralled camp. It's fucking tough cricket, no one ever really looks in control, which makes a few of the innings played top draw. Then add in the subplots, the off-field stuff, the at times disgraceful behaviour on-field, and it's great fund as a neutral.
