Rereading God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by the late Christopher Hitchens.
"Ten Fighter Boys" is basically ten stories by guys flying Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. It was assembled by their Sq Ldr, and it's a great little read. Cheap as chips too.
In that vein, there is an excellent trio of fiction books by Frank Barnard "Blue Man falling" ;"Band of Eagles" and "To Play the Fox" that follow a couple of charactesr through the early stages of the RAF. The second book was my favourite and is set around the defence of Malta. Good reads. -
after a brief interlude with summer, when I struggled to find time to read, I finished the 3rd installment in the Conqueror Series about Genghis Khan, Bones of the Hills.

Thoroughly enjoyed the read, given it is largely fact based (with some poetic licence) it is an amazing story about how he rose to greatness and how feared and respected he was, and despite all this, his own visions didnt look much further past having all his enemies fear him rather than building a lasting civilisation (when you compare the Mongols to the Romans, Egyptinas etc)

Recommend it to everyone! -

I was going to say what's it about, but that might be a bit of a spoiler so will just say it's yet another fantastic read so far, if a little bit different in that it jumps between quite a few people and areas! -
wow, I thought there was only the 3, will seek out the 4th!!
-

Discussion of John Scalzi's Redshirts novel has been moved to the Nerd stuff and pop culture discussion thread.

Whats with all the moving Tim?

If you really want to move all the Nerd stuff this thread will be down to one page when you move all the fantasy stuff <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />. -
Hey Nepia, was just moving some discussion off the movie review thread really. Thought that putting it in a discussion thread would give people more freedom to really get into it, rather than worrying about clogging up the reviews thread.

I moved the "redshirts" stuff to put more interesting Trek on the new thread.

If you want to discuss books on this thread, go for gold. That's what's it's for. The new thread gives people a place they can get into in-depth/comparative discussion about different aspects of genres of books/movies/tv series/etc or individual works/series. It's also a place you can drop a link or comment about trek/star wars/fantasy/whatever if you don't want to start a new thread.

EDIT: If you want to start a new thread to talk about Game of Thrones or something then please feel free to do so. If you don't want to start a new thread then the nerd/pop culture thread is there for you. -

Ae, all good, was merely inquiring (and having a shot at all you fantasy fans in the process ....) -
Have just finished Clash of Kings, kind of an abrupt finish to a book I thought, but otherwise, equally as good as the 1st series, and cant wait to see how they put some of the new characters on screen as well.

Was gonna wait until after the 2nd series on TV before I started Storm of Swords, but decided I may as well start it!

Am also about 2/3 the way through Empire of Silver, love this series too!! -
Just finished Metro 2033 on my non-Kindle Kindle. I've played the video game and loved it so had to read the book and loved it as well. Imagine the Odyssey meets the Moscow subway system meets a nuclear holocaust.

9/10

Now going to continue The Strain trilogy with the second book The Fall. -
Just finished A Feast For Crows . A lot more bloodthirsty , still just as good as the first three books , unfortunately have to wait for our library to get in A Dance With Dragons . However long it takes to get here is sure to be too long .
-
Finished The Fall and now reading the final part of the Strain trilogy - The Night Eternal. The books are playing out like a Guillermo del Toro movie which is not surprising since he co-wrote it.

The Fall - 7/10 - Didn't like the ending that much but to be fair it was simply just building up for The Night Eternal. -
about 3/4 the way through Storm of Swords, and wow! Keep being surprised!
As Tyrion said, Kings are falling like the autumn leaves...Just past the bit where Joffrey dies, I am still unsure if Tyrion had anything to do with it, or it was just good luck...and although I have the impression Arya has died, I think she is too much of a vital character to kill off just yet. Glad I started these books rather than just wait for the TV series, although it has made me even more keen to see it on screen, not long now
-
Can't remember if I've already mentioned the series earlier in the thread but have just finished the latest (3rd book) in Stephen Leather's 'Jack Nightingale' series. The books are 'Nightfall', 'Midnight' and 'Nightmare'.
I only started these because I enjoy Leather's Spider Murphy series about an undercover cop. Well written pulp crime fiction, well paced and easy to read.
The Nightingale books seem a bit weird in their description and I wouldn't normally have picked them up but I really enjoyed them. The premise is basically an ex-cop turned PI that discovers that his real father (who he knew nothing about) was into the occult and basically sold Nightingales soul to a demon in return for favours. He has only a few days until the birthday in which his soul is taken. The clever part is that all of the 'weird occult stuff' is written as if it is just matter of fact and it doesn't get in the way of what is basically a good story with plenty of action.

The other one recently finished is the latest from Stuart MacBride. Again this is a very gritty Scottish serial killer type story but is a stand alone and not part of the Logan McRae series. Gory, brutal and with very flawed heroes. A good dash of dark humour as well.
