This has to be bullshit. Yes he is eligible to apply for NZ citizenship by descent but surely he doesn't automatically become one because his dad was born there. If true that is utterly fucking retarded.
Like most things, citizenship is governed by the law at time of birth, and the NZ law of the era automatically granted citizenship to children whose fathers were NZ citizens (current law requires the child to apply for it). Barnaby Joyce's father was born in NZ, so was a citizen by birth, and consequently handed it down to his children.
Then it's utterly retarded.
Nice of NZ labour to lend a hand btw.
? The NZ law was based on the British law from 1920, and was the same as the Australian law and the Canadian law of the time, as it was agreed at the Commonwealth Heads Of Government meeting in 1947.
Basically, until recently, jus soli was as common as jus sanguinis, and both were the normal way of things, as compared to naturalisation. Moving away from jus soli is a recent development, although since Australians have NZ residence when here, any Australian children born here in NZ are citizens by birth.
Thank you for that but it's still farking retarded.

Betoota Advocate is running multiple Barnaby Joyce stories - its great mileage.
Barnaby Joyce Questioned About Plans To Turn Adani Mine Into World’s Biggest Hāngī
CLANCY OVERELL | Editor | CONTACT
Embattled Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce is under fire today, as GetUp campaigners reveal leaked documents that suggest his support for the $21 billion Adani coal project in central Queensland’s Galilee Basin was purely so that he could cook a mean feed for all of his bros.
Transcripts between the Member For New England and Indian coal magnate, Guatam Adani, show that Mr Joyce was willing to support whatever infrastructure developments were needed to aid the project – so long as he was allowed to use the giant open-cut hole in the ground when they were finished.
“It’ll be choice, bro” said Mr Joyce.
“I’ll invite all the family around and we’ll get stuck in to a mean Hāngī”
The uniquely New Zealand Hāngī is a style of cooking where different ingredients are traditionally wrapped in flax leaves underground foliage with cloth sacks, aluminium foil and wire baskets on top of hot coals. Common conconctions include pork, mutton or lamb, potato, pumpkin, cabbage and stuffing are also included.
The result of this long process is tender, off-the-bone meat and delicious vegetables, all infused with a smoky, earthy fragrance, something that Mr Joyce is apparently quite fond of.
Mr Joyce has previously said the Adani coal mine project will create 10,000 jobs and inject huge sums into the economy – but failed to mention his interest in cooking a barbecue in the giant open-cut coal mine.
When questioned about these revelations by journalists today, Mr Joyce said GetUp was “awff their heads”.

I like Kiwblogs idea. NZ just needs to threaten to make all Aus politicians citizens of NZ from the 1st of next month. Therefore making them all ineligible to serve, and keep making anyone who stands for parliament a NZ citizen. We will stop doing to that when they start [paying a tithe of 100 Billion dollars a year or get enough brains enough to change a dumb law.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback I think you ransom about $100m. A figure which is LESS than the cost of a referendum, but enough to make a real difference to the bottom line. Now that would be an interesting decision.
-
Seriously - how fucking thick would you have to be to have a New Zealand parent, but not to have wondered and inquired as to whether you're eligible for or hold dual citizenship?
As for that sour bitch Julie Bishop talking about "treachery" - doesn't she like having her laws enforced? Presumably, not when it's a bit inconvenient?

Nice one
Barnaby can hang for all I care but Heard and Captain Sparrow broke the law. No winners in the fuckwit competition.
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel yeah but she's hot so that makes it ok.

JOYCE: I don't think for either Scott Ludlam or Larissa Waters there was anything malicious about it. I think merely an oversight, but unfortunately that's the law. It's like if you're driving on the road without a licence and you get pulled over. Well, you're in a spot of bother. They were members of parliament. It's quite clear under Section 44, you can't be a member of parliament and have dual citizenship. It's black and white. The outcome is black and white. That's just, that's just the way it is.
Its not often I agree with Barnaby but on this occasion, I agree with him 100%. Its very straightforward. One may not like the outcome but "thats just the way it is". The least he could do is step down until the High Court has determined a ruling. There should definitely be a referendum to have it changed but until then, it is the law by which Australia is governed.

So that Wong bloke had her chief of staff contact an NZ MP to investigate this. Of course Wong denies all knowledge. Silly chief of staff, shouldn't have done that. What complete bullshit.
Julie Bishop makes me puke, but she actually has a point here.

I didn't think Aus politics could get any more ridiculous. But here we are. See the government reckon they have a bunch of Labour names to feed to the high court, including Penny Wong (it's cause she looks different). Awesome.
Fuck me dead. This is what we are reduced to.
As an aside, any vision of parliament makes me pissed off. I can't stand the fact that it looks like an out of control school classroom, with the sneering and jeering and faux-laughter when someone from the other side is talking. It's fucking childish. These fluffybunnies are supposed to represent and govern us? What fucking hope is there?

Yeah it's because she looks different. Nothing to do with the fact she was born in Malaysia to a Malaysian father.
I agree with rest but lay off on the racism bullshit.

So Adern, Marcus Ganley (Wong's CoS) and Chris Hipkins (Labour MP who asked the questions in Parliament) all worked together in Clarks strategy team for about 6 mths.
Adern and Ganley merely knew each other but Ganley and Hipkins were mates.
Very very stupid by Hipkins. Adern has to criticize Aussie whilst not pissing them off.
Interesting to see how rabid Peters gets as this is normally exactly his bag. If he goes softly softly could be an indicator of his preferred coalition partner

Unwise of Hipkins, especially for a party whip (enforcing party discipline is literally his job), but I'm currently in Melbourne for a holiday, and over here the Aussie media are roasting Bishop for her comments - basically, they aren't having a bar of it. Stupidly, nobody in Labour had to do anything because as Peter Dunne (Minister of Internal Affairs) has confirmed, it was coming out via Aussie media, and Fairfax asked him first. I believe Dunne on that because Labour are literally trying to end Dunne's career, so he has no reason to stick up for them at all.
Peters will probably go soft on it eventually because nobody ever lost votes for sticking up to the Aussies.
