    Check out the NZ scoreboard v Kenya. I was glimpsing during the day and thought we were on the brink of breaking the World record for 50 over internationals - before the most bizarre hat-trick(?) scuppered it. (End of over 46, start of 47) They got 436 anyway - so close to the senior mark of 443. (Under 19 record is 480 it turns out). The cricinfo scoreboard and commentary makes for some interesting reading... Was anybody there to see what happened re the 3 wickets in 3 balls.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the batting of Finn Allen and Jakob Bhula at Bay Oval a few days ago, and they have continued to shine.

    @arhs Forgot all about this.

    Wow - that's got to be about the weirdest "hat-trick" of all time. Especially given the game situation.

    I was looking at the NZ squad a few days ago because not many of those names were familiar to me. The majority of the team is from Wellington. Did they dominate the most recent U19 tournament?

    Had hoped to call into Bay Oval last night to see some cricket, but unfortunately India made Papua New Guinea bat first...

    @bovidae Don't know - but maybe there were misprints in what you saw? This one has four from Wellington, but three each from CD and ND, etc. (Usual bias against South Island players in underage sport!) 🙂

    I see also that, as I suspected, Kaylum Boshier is Lachlan's younger brother.

    I was using the Cric Info site where they didn’t always give their province, just where they were born.

    Lockrose is English-born and Phillips a Saffer (younger brother of Glen).

    Yep most definitely, but the umpires didn’t have to give it out.... bad form from them too!

    @gunner yep.
    Terrible decisions from the adults involved. Far more culpable than the players in this instance. A farcical decision worthy of universal derision

    Wellington did win the U19 tournament this year. Yes, they did dominate. They had a net RR 4 x greater than second placed Auckland.

    I can only think of 3 Wellington players in the 15 man squad though; Ravindra, Bhula and Georgeson.

    Wellington usually suck at age grade level.

    If the fielding team appeals the umpire doesn't really have a choice. Under the letter of the law its out. It's up to the fielding captain to withdraw the appeal at that point. Hopefully they learn from the experience and let it go next time.

    Of course they have a choice.
    Option one: lets give this out and cause some controversy.
    Option two: dead ball, not out.

    I think everyone in the world would choose the correct option, except the two umpires and their over protective employers.

    I think the umpires were right. Don't know if they asked the keeper/captain if he wanted to withdraw his appeal - but, that was the best option open to them.

    37.4. Returning the ball to a fielder

    Either batsman is out Obstructing the field if, at any time while the ball is in play and without the consent of a fielder, he uses his bat or any part of his person, including a hand not holding the bat, to return the ball to any fielder.

    As far as I can see, there's not a law that allows the umpires to call the ball dead unless you were to stretch 20.1.2 to ridiculous lengths.

    Backyard cricket is complicated enough as it is with one bounce one hand catch, over the fence 6 and out, hit any shrubs, bushes or small trees on the full it’s out
