Heaps of hype around Babar Azam, coming in with an average of 58 or something..
Then 31runs in his 5 hit outs..

Test average of 23, first class average of 34. Also, I believe 6 of his 7 ODI tons have been scored in the UAE.

All of this points towards him being a flat track bully.

He has potential but he's not in the same league as other world class players at this stage of his career.

UAE is a tough place to bat, to be fair.

We were a bit lucky to get away with blowing those last 10 overs - probably 20 runs short of par.

Australia and England probably won't let us get get away with that sort of crash.

You could look at it as 20 runs short, which I say we were after the start we had.

But you could also look at the 18 wides we bowled. That’s far too many.

    Add to that:
    10 wides (30 overs) game 1
    12 game 2
    4 (27 overs) game 3
    7 game 4
    18 game 5

Total of 51 wides from 207 overs (average of 12.3 wides per full innings bowled) vs Pakistan’s 19 from 223 overs (average 4.3 per full innings) for the series.

I don’t think we can afford to give England or Aussie an 8 run head start on us...

I know stats aren’t everything in cricket, as we do tend to bowl quite attacking, which naturally lends itself to a less accuracy...

    Still does seem rather high.

Agree, although the wides could also be coming from more attacking bowling. After all we are bowling sides out instead of bowling wide of off and fielding behind point.
In ODIs you don't have to stray much from a brilliant ball that ties the batsman up to something that slips behind his legs and gets wided.
Those extras are the price you pay for bowling at the stumps. Without the wickets coming in numbers the opposition can crack off more than that number by throwing the bat in the latter overs.
    A theory anyway.

@crucial yes sorry my original post was supposed to mention the attacking bowling aspect to it - edited while you were writing the same thing. Great minds....

11 wins in a row and we're still complaining.

    It's like an AB thread!

Remind me again who we’ve played to win those 11. Ahh that’s right the equivalent of Tonga, Fiji, Scotland or Wales.....

I was having a think about Tom Latham and his role in the ODI side. There's plenty of examples of aggressive middle order test batsmen opening in the shorter forms ( BMac, Ryder, Astle, Guptill) but I can't think of a single example of a test opener batting in the middle order of an ODI team. It must be a massive shift for him mentally, perhaps this is why he is struggling?

@MN5 good point, and agree. I feel like he's really there as "insurance" but with our current top 4 I think that's too negative, and we're squandering great platforms with a lack of hitting power lower in the order. Phillips might be the man in the shorter forms TBH.

Sucks to be a test specialist in NZ though...

    @no-quarter

I agree but think that Tom would be the guy to cover for Kane or Ross when they're out and Hesson is probably aware that Ross will only be there for a few more years and wants Latham to step in seemlessly.

Regular income, very part time work, low performance expectation, some travel, free gym membership.

    I'd probably take it.

Or "high quality performance analysis by expert coaches to improve job satisfaction in difficult circumstances".

In one sense his keeping ability is fucking up his ODI chances if that makes sense. If Guppy or Munro fall over for whatever reason I'd be happy to have him open but I'm not convinced he brings a hell of a lot in the middle order.

I haven’t been overly impressed with his keeping. There have been a handful of occasions where he has been a bit untidy. Hasn’t cost us yet, luckily.
