Mercurial is a great word to describe West.

subject to sudden or unpredictable changes of mood or mind.

That pretty much summarises why he's had most of his success off the bench rather then starting and directing a team around the paddock.

I agree with @Rapido I think if he does start, he's better off at 15 injecting himself from time to time rather than constantly touching the ball at 10.

Ihaia West is going to have a great career when a team puts him fulltime at fullback.

To play fullback full time he will need to improve his ability under the high ball a hell of a lot. Right now it is a real weakness.

According to the article below, he's out for the season. IIRC, I saw on his instagram a few days ago that he has had surgery.

They'll both be desperate to play, along with tighthead prop Alex Fidow. He's done for this Super Rugby season too after snapping a ligament in his big toe.

Illness kept Fidow out of the round-one loss to the Bulls, before he scored a try on debut as the Hurricanes beat the Jaguares in Buenos Aires. An eye-socket fracture saw him spend six weeks on the sideline and now he needs surgery on his toe, after getting injured during his club rugby comeback.

I suppose we will have to wait for the books to come out to find out what went wrong for Boyd, the only Canes coach to win Super rugby.
I guess Carlos wanted to be part of a winning team.....

Didn't Plumtree come along as Boyd's assistant on a hand shake agreement that would see Boyd step aside so Plumtree could take over?

Did Spencer work with Plumtree in South Africa?

No. According to Wiki Spencer was involved with the Sharks in 2013, but Plumtree had already left for Ireland.

well, from the outside, it would appear Plumtree is the more valuable part of the Boyd/Plumtree team....

That poorly written article is the first i've heard of Boyd being forced out. I thought that was the plan all along?
Is there anything to back the claims in this article up?

Haven't heard anything about Boyd wanting to stay, or going on back on that prior agreement with Plumtree. Those two still seem super tight, and if anything Boyd might still be salty with the fishheads at head office. The only real shots he's fired were about lack of contact from Hansen.

Stoked to have Spencer coming home - will be interesting to see what he can bring to the coaching team. Toffee pops for everyone!!

@pukunui First I'd heard of it as well, but this article from March provides a little bit more backstory, that Boyd wasn't completely happy to go now.

Seems slightly odd that they would shunt Boyd out the door to accommodate Holland - has he been promoted anyway?

Thanks, that paints quite a different picture than the other shitty article that was looking to stir up controversy. Sounds like Boyd would have preferred to stay a little longer but wanted what was best for the Canes long term so signed offshore to allow them to lock in the long term coaching team.
Also sounds like his problem with the NZRU is as a result of lack of pathways within nz for senior coaches who aren't part of the ABs.

" lack of pathways within nz for senior coaches who aren't part of the ABs." which is ridiculous, what does Boyd want, shall we invent more teams above SR level? We've anyway got the Maori ABs, so maybe Pakeha ABs or NZ welsh ABs! Or maybe a twenty person coaching panel for the ABs? Imo just a grumble because of timing (as much as anything) he missed out on an ABs position, same as players behind legends and players wanting to play the lions. There are only so many posts in a small country like NZ, but heaps of coaches, thus NZ coaches everywhere around the world

Is he thinking about high performance/age grade opportunities? or a wider group of apprentice-type coaches?
