Yep, all hard ball for kids is compulsory helmets.

Injury rates in junior players are low, but increase with age and level of play. Use of protective headgear, particularly by batters, leads to a significant reduction in injuries.

'cause all you hard bastards got shouted down by single mum's š. Philip Joel Hughes might have a bit to do with it too

I could easily get behind it for kids in their mid-teens, some of them are getting rapid. But younger? come on.
Yes, it's very "back in my day" but i only ever wore a lid at prem club level. Never at high school, and never at any other senior grade. And i could barely hold a bat.
-
@mariner4life yeah, fully understand, that's why we were lucky to have grown up before everything was bad.
Stanhope sums it up best yet again: -

@nzzp if he is that old then all of this advice is waaaay over the top. Inner thigh guard? learning to sway past bouncers? jesus.
I think it's safe to assume @JK wants to live vicariously through his son as a pro cricketer, so IMO it's never to early to start training him up for the serious stuff.

Why is Scott getting the hate?
He ran out @antipodean, who I believe is a lawyer who supports the tahs.
Iām loving Scott.

Wow we got plenty of cricket dad pros here so appreciate the advice.
JK jnr has just turned 9 so year 4.
Had first preseason practice with team today and first time running, well even walking in pads, was hilarious. Was using club supplied ones and were a bit big so will get correct fitting ones for him this wekend and the thigh pad too. Once he ha pads we will get the drills going so hes gets use to moving about in them.
And yep had helmet too. Didnt seem to mind wearing that at all.
His bowling was good today. Definately one of the better bowlers there. Good line but playable compared to some of the loose shit on display.
Net sessions will happen with me every saturday morning for the next few weeks as our eldest has a music lesson then at the local intermediate and there some are some good nets there we can use for an hour

Update on the hardball. Two games in and going ok.
It's fair to say there is a wide variety of skills and talent on show in this grade. A lot of kids appear to be still struggling a bit with the bowling thing (lots of wides and no balls) which can make batting a bit shit at times as balls are rebowled (just extra runs) meaning some of the shit is pretty much unplayable.
JK Jnr is doing well and def holding his own.
Batting - been bowled out twice down the leg side in two games so easily fixed. Some good runs though and manages to get bat on ball for a single pretty much every time as long as the ball is on the pitch. Running with pads now no problem. Highlight would be the first ball of his first game which he flat batted back past the bowler for 4.
Bowling - very good. Seems to have found his line and length and can vary it (odd yorker thrown in) when he wants. Pace isnt there just yet but not sure he needs it yet. Double wicket maiden in his first over on saturday (ended up 2/2 off 2 overs) and was on a hatrick after a caught behind, a catch at mid on and then he 3rd was a very narrow miss at being bowled.
Fielding - generally good and learnt not to use his feet very quickly. Put down a catch on saturday which I thought he would have taken. Complained about how hard the ball was and how much it hurt...
Seems to really enjoy the game too.

Update - 6 weeks in to season for 4 wins, a narrow loss and a wash out (weekend gone). Lads shown enough to make the clubs rep team for his age group. Its def not his batting that got him there but his bowling has been A1. Lacking in any real pace but great line and gets plenty of wickets for bugger all runs.

Glen McGrath got 5 for 50 that day...Sorry, seemed the perfect spot for a TISM quote

Need advice re rugby this year for lil red.
The kids 9 going on 10 late this year and one of the smallest kids in his class at school etc. Currently weighs 28kg on the dot which is the cut off point for J5.
Played J6 last year and year before so has done two years tackle now. Not super confident but does very well when gets involved. Good tackling technique and work rate and pretty quick with a good step. Looks like a 10 to me or even a 9 as has a great pass for a kid of his age.
Anyway, he could prob hold his weight fine at 28kg through to 1 May and play J5 (pretty much same as J6 but has drop kick to start game rather than a tap and can fend). J4 goes to full field and pretty much full rugby but still no pushing in scrums I think. J4 weight grade jumps up a bit. He could be up to 38kg for his age (so 10kg heavier than current weight which is a lot at that size). Younger kids up to 50kg!
Anyone elses kid skipped a grade like this? Handle it OK?
He's keen on J4. Most, if not all, of his team from last year will be J5 and I think he would enjoy the season a hell of a lot more in J5.
-
@JK I guess there's no option to jump grades mid-season? I reckon J5 sounds like the best option and you could try and sell him on the new things that he can learn (droppies and fending) in that grade, ahead of moving up with the bigger kids.
Perhaps set him some goals to really bed in good technique for tackling so he's confident of dropping the big'uns in J4 next year.On the flip side my little bro became a demon openside as he was always playing against bigger kids. He had a nose for the ball and was fearless in the tackle. But he had good technique (due to tackling me endlessly in the backyard
Being able to fend is quite a big change - get him some vids of DC and CJ doing their thing.
I guess the main factor or draw card for J5 will be sticking with his mates?
